The Snail

I was talking to KLIX Commer owner, Charlie, the other day - he has done a Rapier conversion and he had no problem either. I wonder what's going on - do the different types of O/D box take different linkages. Is yours a 'J' type Jules?

I dont know. But I think its v.likely as it came from a 76 car and the D type was phased out in the 67/68.
A mystery.[?]

Cheers
Jules

it's the later j-type with finer spines on. I only used it because I had it and I knew it had been rebult. You'd make life much simplier getting an earlier sunbeam/rapier/humber/sceptre 'vertical' box that would bolt straight in.

Cover eventually turned up. I'd tried about half a dozen manufacturers around they UK. Most weren't interested / didn't have templates (oddly enough!) Found an out fit that came and measured her up and added extra zips to order (at £20 per zip).

got it from http://www.londoncovers.com/car-cover-outdoor.asp

They are the OEM suppliers to Bentley and McClaren - so the quality is just about right for a commer. I went for the extra heavy weight fabric option which was another £20.

Overall I'm really pleased with it, did cost twice as much as one I bought a few years back for another car but the quality is much better and it fits better.

Been toying with electronics again. I know i can buy a wash wipe kit but it is my more fun (and probably more expensive) to make your own out bit of montego.

talking of electronics, after driving her in the dark a lot over xmas i added a couple of extra rear lights as i'm paranoid about being driven into. They are surface mount so no permanent damage to the van.

I like the high level lights - might come over and have a look (after an MOT; don't want to fail on superfluous lights) have you got a high level brake light there too?

feel free to pop around. The red ones are actually lights and brake lights - ie they go brighter when brake.

you're thinking about MOTs - does this mean he/she's almost road worthy! can't wait to see!

Doubt that I can get a ticket all sorted in time for easter - aiming for end of May latest

The vw ones from just kampers fit perfect there £100

They're like these, they have to be surface mount as the hinge mechanism is very close behind. I used small stainless bolts (insulated from the base) to mount them and connected the wire to these. I actually butched some LED lights and glued them into the lens with silicon. I'll try and take some pictures so it makes more sense. The advantage of using LEDs on the indicators was that it did not put any extra load on the flasher unit and kept the flash rate the same.

That is the Mother Of All Warning Lights[:0] but perfect for your application - nice one [^]

yeah - imagine having a dash full of those!

This week I've been busy with woodwork. The new window frames that the previous owner had made were looking a bit rough after the winter. I think they'd been treated with an interior wood finishing product. The window themselves were also leaking - the rubber strips that held the glass in had shrunk with age.

see the cracks...

The rubber inserts-

first took the windows off and sanded, and sanded, and sanded...
l_d033a01a7a8f46c094a4160147caffa8.jpg

Then painted with wood hardener (the saviour of many a morris traveller) followed by four coats of super-nuke-proof yacht varnish:

l_a1b90f4e8ce64b358f73d3f9fd6ee898.jpg

I cut the rubber seals out and squirted in a bead of black polyurethane goo. The first two window I did with black silicon but it did not set hard enough and I had to redo them - very messy!
Should be more waterproof now:
