All straight forward nuts and bolts - with a few specialist welding bits for the inlet manifold and to blank off the mechanical water pump (thanks Tim[^]). The Rapier engine is the same block but with alloy head and just needs a few Commer bits swapping over to make it fit. The worst bit was chopping the hole through the 'inner wing' to make room for the carb:I
Fun with the engine started here and drifts in and out for the next hundred pages or so:I
Thats Impressive, is that still a 1725 ? I presume the SU carb and high compression give it better economy over my Low comp ( I think ) and Webber carb [?]
Maybe I can aim for something similar in smurf one day. But for now its on the list with fixing the peak and fitting a pop top at the same time, i.e. I want to do it but just not for some time.[8D]
Thank you kind sir yes it's a 1725. The Webber is better than the old Zennith but if you change the exhaust don't go for a standard one - it's very restrictive and strangles the engine. The one I made is on my thread and Paul Goldsmith used the same components adapted for a standard engine - the difference is quite astounding.
Thanks for the tip of Panky, I'm not sre I will bother changing the exhaust at the moment, advancing the ignition seems to make it pull much better and has made it quieter, saved myself some Money
just a thought for you Will....Why did I fit that exhaust in the first place??
You may think it's a bit noisy, it's not that much noisier than a standard one and when you weigh up the difference in performance there is no competition.....like Tim and Panky have said, you want it to be as unrestrictive as possible so as not to strangle the engine........get some sound proofing for that engine cover would be a better idea[8D]
Anyway thats my opinion and it feels a bit odd offering you advice being as the van was mine and now it's yours
Im fitting a 1.8tdi out of a mondeo its what you would call a MASSIVE job lol
The rapier engine is the most easiest conversion to carry out and the holbay one is also as easy but more power to start with but even that will drink fuel like no tomorrow. Modern diesel is the way to go with some boost
A commer with boost will be appering on a screen near you soon!
'It may be unavailable or may not exist' is the message I see:I
Could be too good to be true. Hydrodgenate - thats what they do to vegatable oil to make margarine[:0]
Ta very much[8)]
You can get HC on any engine by skimming the head but the Rapier engine also has a slightly higher state of tune - cylinder head porting and cam, so responds better to more tuning mods. When I first got Harvey back on the road I took him for a test run, the carb set up was very experimental but (and I know it's not big and clever- yes it is[}]) I had him virtually round the clock. I've since de-tuned him a bit by changing the carb needle but he's still capable of easily exceeding the legal limit, not that I do, but the ability to cruise up those long A road and motorway climbs in overdrive is very satisfying[^]
Ahh right, that might have to be something I look into, I presume the inlet manifold you use is much better than the standard one, something halfway between would be ideal for me, meaning I didn't have to cut into the wheel arch.[8D]
I think my best bet would be to find a rapier engine and slowly do it up, fitting it when it was required, however the gearbox mods look scary.[:0][:0][:0]
Your existing OD box will go straight on to the Rapier engine[^] and you could use the twin Strombergs that are normally fitted, just not quite as good (in my opinion:I)
