My Ride Needing A Makeover

Have you checked the real temperature with a digital/laser jobbie? My commers have always stayed at the bottom of the red :)

Clarabel arived back safely at tea time today -Thanks for all the suggestions ,we removed all the badges which stopped the air flow - the 2 in the middle ,the two end ones are backed by metal and the square ones only protrude about 20mm over a hose at each side. It was another hot day today and I guess its more uphill back up to Yorkshire. The temp gauge started off on the line between white and vey hot and moved briefly into the red on uphill runs. I think it must be running at about 105C but need to take Admins advice and check. Ive been driving Clarabel now for about 30 years in its previous leaded life and it never once moved above the middle of the gauge and never ran as hot. Since conversion it has run back here from Commerland , down to the Coventry meet and to the NEC with no problems ( mostly in cold weather)-Probably now need to consult the Guru, Hazel Matt and Thomas are off to the seaside after Easter -This should go OK as its not far. I plan to add some 'Water Wetter' if any of you have heard of it - a strange name but used on gas conversions to reduce coolant temp by up to 10 degrees-In my other life I drive a gas converted freelander and have used this for years to good effect. Fingers crossed! ps noticed a few backfires from the exhaust when I was coasting down hill trying to cool it down -hope this is not serious- I think another session at Commerland might be a good idea soon! - Hazels Dad

Water wetter is that what lorry drivers use [?]
I drove to the first commer meet (guru's)in Ran I had to stop once about half way to check oil & allow to cool approx 20mins I don't think the van was as hot as the gauge read,(cambs to yorkshire) have you got antifreeze at the correct mixture if you put too much in it can have the opposit effect to cooling.Seems to be a common problem.

Unleaded does burn hotter and over the years your rad may have collected some silt. May be worth back flushing it? Also, as suggested, check the temperature of your top hose with a digital/laser thermometer against the gauge (Andy's was over-reading on Babs due to a mis-match between sender and gauge).

Peggy can do 78mph!
If I told you I was a pathological liar, would you believe me?

Could be running a little lean, the popping and back firing could also be a result of this. Check for any leaks on the manifold

Thanks for all the comments and advice - Beginning to get the picture a bit clearer now -The full spec for water wetter above is the same as on my bottle-which is also identical! - Is it safe to use on a Commer? Sounds like a bit of a risk to me! Met an engineer at the weekend who also said it could be running a bit lean- thinking about this we asked MM to try and increase the MPG as it was definitely running very rich on its first run so perhaps it now needs to meet in the middle. Next plan is to buy a digital thermometer and check what is actually going on - check the manifolds and then pos ring up Mr Guru for a slight re-tune prior to the holidays. Thanks again for comments -its good to know someone is out there! Hazels Dad

I took the mini to woburn abbey we got as far as the lions when the mini started to spit & splutter on & off untill it ground to a holt,(very hot & packed day)it was the points burning out,was similar to coil packing in.
simon bbc electonic ignition sorted that out on Sybhil hidden inside dizzy
(we were rescued from the lions enclosure but they towed us round it a bit first)[^]

Clarabel already has electronic ignition -dont fancy being eaten by lions- Contacted the Guru today -Hazel and co will pop in to Commerland on the way to the seaside for a check over and a re-tune. C has a new water pump (thanks to Commerland raffle!) -recon rad and no thermostat + very litle antifreeze left after 3 disconnects -only leaves the mixture and perhaps voltage reg on gauges (MM suggested this).MM said C should ony run at max 90 degrees - digital laser thingy should arrive tomorrow to check actual temp.Decided to leave Water Wetter on shelf-thanks for caution and U Tube video which does suggest its more ideal for modern high spec engines. I used to use this in my old 1700 race tuned crossflow its brill stuff and worked very well in my old engines;)
