Considering selling my van.

Well done Andrew, but I wouldn't bother replacing the fuel line (if it is sound)(unless you really want to) you just have to keep cleaning out your filter/s of muck over time.
 
Unfortunately the original tanks are prone to sending crap through. They were painted on the inside and modern fuel breaks it down into little shards and flecks - the dreaded SNAKESKIN:eek:
 
So if it is the dreaded snakeskin:eek: will it be the same after the tank has been emptied? So if yes will my van need a new tank?Would that of corsed the problem of cutting out?
 
It's very difficult to get it all out of the tank as bits of the lining paint keep breaking away. But see how it goes first, fit an in line filter before the pump and carry a couple spare and see if it keeps blocking before you shell out on a new tank.
 
Finally I've got my van started, there was air being drawn in under the glass on the pump. That's been sealed, so the petrels coming through fine. There
Was over an egg cup full of grit in the fuel filter. The temp gauge is working fine, which is good. A new copper fuel line is in place.
 
What would of caused the grit to build up in the tank? Yes I hope it's sorted, it's been a long journey.:mad:

Over 40 years of fill ups each one putting a few grains in, and the inside of the tank could have a bit of rust that's finally found it's way through. Did you run very low on fuel at some point?
 
There were a few times when it was quite low, but I've never run out of fuel. Can the tank be cleaned? Suppose it's best to keep an eye on the fuel filter to see if anymore deposits build up.
 
Yep best way, short term, is regular checks on the filter - and carry a spare one
 
Good news Andrew.

Thought mine was exceptionally bad when I cleaned the fuel pump filter today (attached) but sounds like it's normal! Particularly where's there a DPO (Dreaded Previous Owner) involved.

On the plus side no snakeskin so I'll settle for that

That looks like snakeskin to me, little flecks of paint:(
And there's a green plant growing in there:eek:
 
Them bits of hard paint and grit and forrin bodies don't look like snakeskin to me:oops:
And there are still little gaps to allow a trickle through.
 
Yep not totally blocked but has increased the filtration rate a bit;) Sometimes the tank lining comes of in slithers other times in chips and flecks, cant think anywhere else paint chips would come from:(
