So the screw nearest the choke linkage/air filter is the screw you adjust for idling? Do I need to adjust this screw as it appears to be idling fine? So as the mixture screw (the one in the picture)was turned out 3 and a half times would this of meant that two much fuel was coming into the carb?

If the idle is OK then leave it as it is, yes because the mixture screw was so far out the tick over was too high because of the rich mixture.

Idling is what I do all day
But on an engine it's the same thing

Sorted the tickover, my mate said I'd done it spot on. We had a lovely evening watching foxes and roe deer. The van seemed fine.
