Considering selling my van.

That's it attached to the side of the engine manifold below the carb. It's quite dark, the end is about 10 inches away but I can't ge it into the picture. The material feels like copper, it's certainly metal not plastic or rubber. When I try and start her petrol comes out the end until she's warm.
 
That looks like the manifold drain. If the float chamber overflows the petrol finds it's way into the manifold and dribbles out of that pipe onto the exhaust:eek: It's designed to do that but not an elegant solution to the problem, it's another sign that either the float is set too high or the float valve is passing.
 
Thanks Panky, my mate reset the float chamber. Are all carburettors the same when you reset them or could it be to high? If the float valve is passing how do you stop it from passing?
 
All the Zeniths are the same. If the float level is correct then there's either a bit of crap under the float valve seat or it has been damaged, in that case it has to be renewed. It is common for a few drops to dribble out of the drain when the engine is stopped but not ideal as petrol fumes get into the cab.
Here's how the float is set, no harm in trying a slightly lower setting - but not too much just a couple of mm.

Well it's been a while since I've posted. I've got a carb kit, I'm just waiting to strip it down and get the carb back on my van. There's no way i could of done all of this without my good mate Tony. I'm looking forward to giving my van a good clean.
 
Glad to be back as I've missed you Panky:(, won't be away for that long again. My van should be sorted next week. I decided to go for a kit, better to be safe.
 
My carburettor is going back on tomorrow, I went for a carb kit in the end. Then next weekend it's going over to a friend of mine who going to service it and tune the engine up for me. I'm looking forward to taking it out, it's been off the road since August the 24'th.
 
After the carb kit has been fitted will that stop any leaks from the carburettor? What exactly is in a carb kit?Everything will be re set correctly, so we should be good to go. Loads more questions for you all.;)
 
A full carb kit will have everything you need to re-build the carb. Hopefully it contains a new float valve assembly which, I recon, is the cause of the leak.
Where did you get the kit from?
 
advice from me Andrew is to take lots of good quality pics as you dissemble it. Also check the float height and adjust if needed. Good luck..its good fun tbh building carbs

Luckily I'm going to rebuild it with my mate helping me, the kit was ordered by my mate for my Zenith Carb. Hopefully it all goes to plan.
 
When my carb is back on apart from petrol leaking from the breather hole again(I'm sure it won't ) is there anywhere I should be checking? Obviously I want to be certain before I take my can out.
 
Just the usual checks for leaks but you will need to set the mixture again. A good starting point is to screw the mixture screw right in then screw it back 1 1/2 turns, get the engine running and warm then turn the mixture screw in until the engine note changes and turn the screw back out 1/4 of a turn. A good check to see if you've got it right is to pull the choke out while it's warm and running, if the engine speeds up then it's too weak, if it falters then it's too rich, if it stays the same or speeds up slightly then it's OK.
Go for a good run then check one of the spark plugs, it should be a nice biscuit colour, if it's black and sooty then the mixture is too rich. Try it and take a picture so we can see.
