Chris's new ride

hi there guys, hi there paul dont worry mate ive thought alot about what sort of engine to put into the van ,i dont want to put anything to new in there because of all the hassel of the different wireing looms and trying to make it fit, i also dont want a v8 in there as it will be a right pig to fit in and also to work on, so i thought i know what would be a nice lump to put in and came up with the 25s triumph engine, ive had lots of theses cars over the years and they sound fantastic ,a nice deep burble sound to them and i think because its a straight six cylinder engine of about the same year as the van it might be the easier way to go, as its up right in appearance and just a bit longer in length, i think there will be enough room in the engine bay ,dont you agree. with my last triumph i took the head off the engine and had about 40-50 thou shaved off of it, i polished out the port holes ,and tweeked the carbs by putting better jets into them, and then i wired up the solonoid on the over drive so it worked in second gear as well as third and fourth. god it when like stink i used to pis- all over the boy racers who dared to take me on. boy i miss that car i wish i hadnt sold it now. they sound even better if you fit a chris witter stainless steel sport exaust to them, which mine had of coarse. ( watch this space):):p

Is the straight six much longer than the original engine? you may need a bit of jiggery pokery with the front end of the engine bay to move the rad forward [?]

its not that much longer in length i dont think, but im sure you will dig out your encyclopeadia of engines and automobiles and prove us al wrong, but i still think it would be easier to fit than a v8 or something of that nature.;):p

any way its past my bed time im to old for all this staying up lark im off to bed ,will see you all tomorrow.[:0]:p

The Motor Engineers Handbook (engine transplant section, Triumph/Rootes) states 'To fit a six pot in a four pot hole requires a bit of ingenuity and jiggery pokery but the builder will be rewarded with an engine note to chill the spine. However to fit an eight pot in that space would be more difficult but the resulting symphony of burbles and growls would make a grown man weep (see section Rover/Rootes););)
The Triumph route sounds brilliant and unusual (I new a couple of guys with a GT6 and Vitesse and they purred [8D]) but if I was to consider a similar conversion I think the V8 would be hard to beat but more obvious. But hey we're not all the same, It would be boring if we were :D

I really wouldnt fancy the commer fitted with a yank block with the standard braking system...[V].You would soon be wearing theose 'brown' boxershorts..[}:)], and most likely be wearing some bandages.Would be an intersting ride for sure..[^]

The six would probably suit better I agree, it seems a natural progression to upgrade with a good solid piece of British iron [^]good and torquey, you know me just waxing lyrical and stirring it up ;);)[}:)]

ive made my mind up and thats the way im gonna go, like you said yourself you cant beat a good old bit of british beef in your belly, and i know these engines inside and out and they very rarely ever let you down ,they just keep on going with lots of power with that lusty smooth sound of the straight six cylinders. you cant beat it.:p:);)

It's a brilliant project, running low on those tasty wheels with a pair of 2" chrome pipes out the back growling like a panther, windows with just the right amount of tint and a few tasteful chrome bits splashed around, and you can brew up as well [^]. Can I have a go when it's done please :I

I'll be up for the sensible, functional award. Just want it back on the road looking reasonable, mods may come later but nowt extreme :)

Come on Chris we're waffling away in you string and haven't heard from you in ages. If we go somewhere else to chat will you give us an update on Ran :)

Im gonna have to go for the 'practical' approach, having the highwayman i can hardly drop her 6 inch...well i could but i reckon im gonna have to keep to as close to original as possible with this one..if i had a van or pickup then it would be a totally different matter...

I saw a Bedford J2 bus today up for grabs in a bus preservation mag...i have to admit i nearly made the phonecall..lol!...i have a thing for those buses..though i reckon i would anger the purists when i rip all the seats out and make it into a motorhome..lol[}:)]

hi guy's still here!this morning i got the dogs in their harnesses, promised them a ride in ran,but wouldn't start up [xx(]...she has an immobiliser...i thought that might be the problem, charged the battery up,just started her up :D it's taken me all day :I was the lights in the interior came on sometime yesterday!wanted to go show her to my dad,my sister is hassling to borrow her [V] she wants to take her to that muddy place [:0] if any one knows the van please get in touch to let me know about the switches :)

Not.......the countryside [:0] she must be mad, it smells (but I like it [^]) The switches in Ran, are they the standard ones on the dash or has someone fitted them for some added equipment

talking of the enterprize i bet your highway man camper is like the inside of the tardis compared to our smaller campers paul, i think we sould re consider your names and call chris captain kurk and you dr who and martin:D[}:)] and panky can be called the cling ons.

are you sitting comfortably??the control panel seems quite straight forward 1 or 2 not sure about...it's behind the seats,(i think would have original been bench seat into double bed)? but some one has added a leisure battery behind passenger seat, car battery behind drivers seat, immobiliser and battery charger combined with interior light etc etc comes with a hook up,but no inlet on side of van??socket again behind drivers seat which the charger is pluged into.there is also a double socket in the rear of van, mains junction type box...then there are the fog lights front and rear, extra brake lights at rear i think only the person who did all this would know exactly how it all works [:0]perhaps take some pic's for all to see??

hahaha...its nice though not to have to 'pop'the roof up to be able to stand up...im gonna have to get busy with her if im to make it upto Martins in june though...:D;)
