Blimey has it been that long since an update
Not been rushing exactly but freezing cold and Christmas got in the way a bit - but I've been doing bits an pieces. After a re-think I decided that .0015" was a bit tight for the end float on the crank so it all came out again for a clean and more linnishing of the thrusts (steady Jim). After wearing out the side, of my thumb and wondering where all the blood was coming from on the emery cloth, I was happy at .003" float so the crank was boxed back up and mains and big end shells torqued down. Next I had a good look at the Piper 285 cam, it was looking a bit ropey so a decision was made to refit the original (MG Metro) cam, not too disapointed as the general consensus it that it will make a nice torquey engine with spec I've got.
Looks like new
All in place with centre main strap to stop crank flex.
Next was engine end plate and timing gear (vernier adjustable) and drop the gearbox on. I realised my mistake last time as I fitted the end plate after I'd fitted the gearbox and I'm pretty sure this is what caused the big oil leak. There's a half moon seal that fits between gearbox and bearing cap and the plate stops it squishing out when the gearbox to block bolts are tightened up - lesson learned
So now it needed dialling in, same method as before (for those who can remember that far back) but with a couple of degrees advance to allow for settling/wear.
Enjoyed doing that again
Next came timing chain cover, transfer case, flywheel, clutch and the 'wok' - and a lick of paint
Spent some time today painting brackets and the head so engine just about done
