Back of the garage

ooooh I likes boxes lol. Looks like you'll be busy :)
I got offered a '96 Mini Equinox the other day..... Turned it down, I've got enough on

Yes been beavering:)
Honed the bores with a £12 tool off eBay. I probably spent about 30 seconds on each pot using engine oil and WD40 as lubrication and the stones on the honer are worn completely away - cheaper to buy a new honer than replacement stones for next time:rolleyes:

A few marks left but cant actually feel them with a finger nail. I measured the ring gap with an old ring and it was over .025" , which is way over, but the measurement was even top middle and bottom of bore. I was well chuffed when I checked the gaps with a new ring to find they were .008" which is just below the .010" minimum gap, but once the rings have bedded in they should be pretty much spot on - not bad for an engine with close to 100K miles on it:cool:

Pistons cleaned up and new rings fitted, most satisfying.

I'll be jet washing the block before I go any further, just to make sure I get rid of all the grit from the honing.

phwoarr engine innards! Looking forward to the post where you have first started the rebuilt engine :)

I know it's not like me but I'm taking my time on this build.

Pistons and crank are in with their new bearings using lots of build lube on everything.

End float should be between .002" and .003"

It was a bit tight initially but linishing down the back of one of the new thrusts got it spot on:) and much to my surprise everything actually turns:eek:

The centre main cap needs machining down to take the support strap (I know a man who can) so I'll turn my attention to the head while that's being done

Slowly slowly, just doing a little bit each day.
The head gas been stripped, cleaned, valve lapped in and cleaned again - it's in very good nick:)

Cam followers looked a bit dodgy so new ones were fitted

Shiny like new and no sign of any wear in the guides

Time to line up the rockers. The later sintered type were made to accomodate the valve spacings both the small and large bore engines so it was a compromise and the rockers are extra wide to fit both engines - which doesn't help with even loadings on the rocker shaft or valve stems. The result of a bit of machining (angle grinder) and a couple of washers

Nice and even.

Rocker shaft is worn so new one on order

Just waiting for the centre cap to come back after machining and I can button up the crank and mate the engine to gearbox:cool:
