Well, there's the conundrum. On all the original documentation have: the original Green logbook - it's capacity is listed as 1725. However, on the modern V5, it's down as a 1500 - go figure. It's a late PA, registered in May 1967 - and I believe the PB was introduced soon after?

Anyway, aparently the later PA's had a 1600 unit fitted. I guess without dismantling the engine, I am not going to find out the capacity.

I think it's been listed as a 1500 on the V5, because the van description in Commer 1500 wanderer, and that mistake was made when the records were computerised. Having spoken to Martin, he thinks it might be a crossover vehicle between the two?:)
 
It could be the 1500 refers to the 15cwt van on the v5 and not engine size ?

The 1500cc engine was only fitted for the first couple of years of production, AFAIK. The 1725 fitted for PB with the 1600cc in between.

The engine number matches the original green logbook, which stats the rating to be 1724.

if the numbers match the Original style log book then i would say it is most likely a 1725 m8. sounds like a mess up on dvla's database.

After Looking through the engine specs:-

Bore x Stroke mm (rounded)
1500 79 x 76
1600 81.5 x 76.2
1725 81.5 x 82.6

Now you can put us all out of our misery, take off the head and measure up!

Or at least remove a sparkplug, measure the stroke and narrow it down:D
 
That page is from the workshop manual for the PB series only. :)

Anyway, I have sussed out a way of finding out without measuring the bores. All 1725 engines have 5 main bearings, and the 1494 and 1592 engines have 3 main bearings. So all you have to do is go and count the number or main bearing oilway blanking plugs in the bottom of the block. It will be 5 for a 1725, and 3 for anything else. Simple really! :D

However, I am not that keen to go down to the workshop to count this now - and I might later be proved wrong!

I hadn't seen one of these before, only the one that looked like the starship enterprise. Hmmm, interesting. What SU is that? Does this mean there is no cutting up of van of any kind?

Glad to see someone else has used an inertia cut out switch - must be running a electric pump me thinks.
 
Well, the engine has 5 blanking plugs on the oilway, so it is a 1725cc engine - which is strange seeing as they were introduced with the PB, and mine is 100% PA with PACM1500 on the chassis plate, and the rear handbrake.

Well, at least that's one conundrum sorted. Just wait until I get onto the subject of Overdrive gearboxes. I am going to drive you all mad!:p

Next installment will be next week when I get the service kit and put the carb back together...
 
Oops should have read the thread properly:I
No cutting what so ever (unlike mine:I) and a cone K&N will fit in rather than the tubing. The carb is a 1 3/4" HF44, usually off a 1275 Mini[8D] - other applications are availble for nicking stuff off.

That's a great piece of info, now we know how to identify the different engines[^]
As you said it's a cross-over model so they must have added bits from both ranges.

I don't think so. I have a full service history and all that, and there is no mention of an engine change - and the number is correct - and matches the original green log book. Maybe the larger engine was specified by Bluebird? Who knows[?]

What I want to know now is how do you tell if it's a low compression or high compression engine and don't say by sticking your finger down one of the plug holes and starting it up,
