Vive le rust porn

Time for a bit of an update: Having reunited the engine and gearbox I filled up with oil and anti-freeze ready for the first start. Mrs Renaultvation (Liz) was there to record the event. I started with the fuel pump disconnected and turned the engine over until the oil light went out. Then pump connected went for it - nothing! Disconnected fuel line in engine bay to see if any fuel was getting through and it wasn't. Removed fuel pump and took it home for testing. It was working, but couldn't pull any fuel from the tank, so I used a large syringe to pull some fuel through and prime the pump. That is when I discovered the massive leak in the fuel pipe. Ordered some pipe and made a repair section, only to discover two more pinholes just beyond the repair when it was under pressure. Also noted the pump was leaking. Made a longer replacement section and ordered some new seals for the pump. Now had fuel at the front of the car and gave it a try. She fired, but not for long and wouldn't idle. However, on checking under the car, more fuel was leaking, this time from the return pipe to the tank. Made a new section of pipe and replaced the pump seals. I also noticed that the HT leads were the wrong way round on cylinders 1 & 2, hence the poor running. However, I am still not getting enough fuel to the engine, so have ordered a fuel pressure gauge to see what I am getting. I may have another look at the pump. Unfortunately, it is unique to the Bosch D Jetronic fuel injection as used by Porsche, Mercedes and Volvo and prices for spares or repair pumps are through the roof.
