10 points for Panky. Source of the water leak is......

Looks like someone just kept stuffing bodyfiller and card etc into the hole until it stopped leaking but failed. [:0]

Peggy's got an MOT !!! (not a lie)

Look at what the postman delivered this morning!

Unfortunately, they missed the water pump gasket - but I might be able to reuse the existing one - or some instant gasket.

Is that one of Speedies? I'm down to my last couple now, so I'll have to buy them in [V]

Productive day today. Cleaned up the mating surfaces of the water pump and block. Fitted the thermostat housing and thermostat, and then the water pump. As I didn't have any gaskets for the water pump, used instant gasket. I'll have to wait till tomorrow to see if there are any leaks. All threads and bolts liberally coated in copper grease. Only issue was the new bypass hose was a touch to long, which made fitting the watter pump very difficult, so it was trimmed a little.

Also sorted out the alternator mounting. For some reason, the alternator was held on by a couple of small metric bolts. So, took off the mount, cleaned out the treads and then had a hunt for a couple of suitable 5/16th bolts to use to secure the pivot mount - a pair of bolts from an imp clutch slave cylinder did the job just fine.

So, for tomorrow, refit rad, fill with fluid and start-up. If there are no leaks, I might even try adjusting the tappets, as it's very noisy on tickover. Also took the opportunity to fit the new choke cable, but it seem to be a bit short for a webber carb - so I guess I'll have to send it away to have it lengthened. Any ideas who could do this?

That's all for tonight.

Andy

Nice productive day there Andy, fingers crossed for you 2moz:D

Would it not be cheaper to buy a new cable fro Speedy's? or can you not re-route it?

I have a pic of your van before you bought it, would you like me to post it? It was taken at Beaullieau:)

I needed a longer cable for the SU I fitted - ebay came up trumps with a universal fit 36" long item, I trimmed it down to suit.

Bugger. The themo cap has a crack in it. Anyone got a good second hand one they could sell me?

I think I may have overtightened the bolts for the cover. What is the recommended torque - as I don't have a manual to tell me.

However, had the engine running - and the water pump seems to be holding its water.

Babs has a webber carb fitted and the choke cable was too big for the hole - so I bought the standard replacement from Speedies - but that is obviously for the original carb and although it just about reaches - and works - it could do with being the same length as the one it had before. Just like it to look original.

Please post the piccies, by the way

Nice. Looks just the same now, only dirtier. I wish I knew what colours they used on the respray, as I am going to need to get replacement doors at some point. Unfortunately I haven't had a reply from Ooooh, who I bought it from.

I broke two the same way - check the face on the water pump is flat.

Speedies have had another order this morning - new thermo cap, the missing water pump gaskets and an oil filter. This time I will endeavour to ensure that I do not overtighten the bolds for the thermostat housing and cap and actually use my torque wrench - so if any of you know what I should be torquing it to, I'd appreciate knowing it. Seeing as I am going to be fiddling around there - I think I will take the pump back off and try again with gaskets instead of instant gasket. Also going to do an oil change at the weekend after putting some diesel in the sump to see if that will flush the engine oilways and restore a higher oil pressure at idle to get rid of the tappety noise.

In the mean time - does anyone have the following that they'd be willing to sell me:

A pair of door mirrors of the standard type for a 69 PB
A grill pan for an autosleeper grill
The connectors and fixings for the front grill surround. I have the top and bottom pieces, but no connectors - they must have gone missing during the respray.

THanks

Andy

I will have a look I think I may have a spare grill pan not sure may take a while :I
Martin maltas may have sourced mirrors ?he may also be able to supply the grill clips, the mirrors were really hard to get hold of jules does some round ones I think they clamp onto the gutter or seams....

Success!!!!!!

My engine in now continent. However, one of the bolts for the thermo cap that goes through the housing seem to be a bit on the short side - but it's not leaking water. Next weekend there is a run to silverstone for the classic saloon car racing on Sunday.

About to use the stove for the first time to make some congratulatory bacon rolls - and then up to the Emirates to hopefully see the Arse go top.

:)

Good news mate! Took Jack out for a run in Peggy today and he loves her! She ran OK too.
