The Snail

that bike carb setup is going to be ace! I was wondering about that myself but you've beaten me to it (so I want to hear all the details)

once that lot is in you're going to have to get a new name for the van...

I'm only doing it for the fuel economy. honest.

Commeracer, the force is strong with you. Yes, Yes & Yes. There is no rush for this though, the snail is running well at the mo and i'll probably (well maybe not) wait until the end of the summer season before anymore major mods.

I need to do a little more research, most conversions i've seen with these carbs (we'll use the mikunis as they are bigger) have them mounted at 45' - need to do some measurements...

got a phone number I can give you a call on?

Commeracer - sorry for the delay with the carbs. I've been looking for the proper inlets rubbers.

My trip to the bike breakers (and informative chat with guy with a massive tattoo on his face) has taught me that the carbs I have are of a ZX6R Ninja - and the correct rubbers look like this:

l_e6bac23b799740c3b641786ffeae45a5.jpg

Now these aren't the sleeves I had in mind. I've faffed around with some from other bikes but haven't found any that fit right.

Can you work with some like these - or shall I buy some silicone hose?

Some bike carb porn:

There are two schools of thought - either (1)angle the tubes to marry up with the inlet holes, keeping the original bike spacing and linkages:

(2)Or space the carbs (they are on 2 length of M6 studding) which is straightforward but requires fiddly welding on the linkages:

I don't mind which way - though 1 might be better given lack of space - what would be easier to make?

hi sam :) my you have been busy :p. well those bike rubbers are designed to bolt straight to the head which saves alot of work, i should think can be done ok and means you don,t actually need a manifold, just have to take the head off and drill/tap it, so thats option 1.
the straighter the manifold the better the flow and less turbulence, even if it means fiddly linkages its a better way to go.
the easiest option is straight tubes with silicon hose and spaced to suit carbs ;)

Okay Tim - the carbs are all packed up ready to go. You never know i might even make it to the post office by the end of the week!

This is where they need to fit - which is complicated by the idea that they are supposed to be mounted at 45 degrees - and i need to shut the lid, which means if they are to be mounted low enough they foul the exhaust... I've stuck this strombie manifold in with the carbs as this is the one that came with the head and had some 'matching' done to it. If this is an arse to work with then the holbay on is in there to but will need the inlets opening up.

to get enough space to adjust the alternator the exhaust for no.1 comes out to where the carb could do with being.

So after that scientific experiment i reckon if you can nail the carbs into this kind of arrangment:

l_0d5fa71cf0194fe899f6cc72c18bfea8.jpg

note it is the rear carb that is aligned with the inlet port and the front that is offset and they are mounted at nearer 30degrees. this should miss the exhaust and allow enough room for an airbox.

what could possibly go wrong?[8D]

now i am scared [:0], but luckily enough i have some old toilet rolls and some nails so it shouldn,t be a problem :D;)
looks pretty tight on the pipe but we shall overcome.
i have a holbay head to use as a jig so thats useful.
if it comes out a bit high you could always put a power bulge in the lid ;)

OMG... drool - slurpe - dribble:p........no that's not the sound of me tippling :)

i wrote a long post but forgot to log in so lost it all [V]

Been busy getting the snail ready for the summer. virtually every bit of wood had been sanded and varnished

I found the easiest way of doing all this hard work was to watch mrs sunbeam do it.

meanwhile I took the saggy roof apart. two of the piano hinges had snapped and need replacing. I had assumed the sag was caused by snapped rusty screws. The screws turned out to be brass:).

the problem...

Unfortunately i didn't have a spare piece of 8 foot ash. so i drank a beer and had a cunning idea.

did a bit more reinforcement to counter the 'sag'

That's all chaps. Sorry didn't get around to taking any photos it the finished article, but it's looking good (even if the varnish fumes are giving me a headache!)

Nice job[^] I'm looking forward to getting stuck into some woodwork once I've finished the oily bits [8D] Harvey's roof has a similar sag to it:I

no rush tim, guessing it will be the end of the summer at least before i switch to working on the engine again (fingers crossed). I've got the brakes and suspension to tweek yet!

The hole in the wardrobe is for a speaker.

Cheers, I wondered if anyone would notice! I fired a couple of photos off at Christmas and they got back to me in March. The photos remind me how neglected my spitfire has become...

How's you're van doing Jules - not heard anything for a while?
