The Snail

sam, if you want the alloy sump modified then give me a shout :)

"you were only supposed to blow the bloody doors off no.3"

Cheers for that - i'll post some pictures but i think it may be more effort than its worth. Basically the main oil holding bit is at the front rather than the back. Not sure how much of an issue hot oil is going to be.

That was annoying, just typed all of this then lost it because i hadn't logged in.

Progress has mostly been slow recently. Getting manifolds to fit has taken a while. The exhaust is almost complete, just need to hang it from the body a trim the tail pipe. a free flow 1.75inch system is utter overkill i know - but i got carried away - and those jetex silencers were so easy to fit - let's hope there is still enough backpressure for some torque!

I have a choice of two inlet manifolds - one points the carbs to high, the other (a water heated one) fouls most stuff - angle grinder please!

With the engine in bits the thing i can do to get it back on the road as soon as possible is ...

Prop is now done, but could probably do with balancing - this costs about £30 at a specialists.

Looks a nice tidy job, thats coming together realy well..
I look forward to a viewing at one of the meets..
Good luck with it..:)

Looks like an installation fit for the cracking van it's going in, love it [^]

could we have a peek inside of roof up?:p please :)

"RAN"the van FORSALE. "SYBHIL" & N0.1 Probably won't get restored unless I win the lottery.

just like to say your van looks great and the finish on the engine and exhaust look really super professional. I'm proud of you (LOL)

I agree, I'll be bookmarking this for "vans to aspire to" when I stop playing and start restoring!

it is looking more beautiful per post [^]
peak in side roof up :p

Nice work.
Your cut & shut on the prop has inspired me to do the same. I have been stalling for several weeks now on this, think Ive developed a bit of a mental block on it.

I used the std 150 heated inlet manifold which went on fairly easily (although I'm now going to have to T into the top hose for a heater supply)

PS before you use up your rocker gasket - I found that the filler neck on the Holbay cover needed shortening for the cover to fit back

Definately how it should be done, most impressed and forgive me if I pinch any of your ideas :).

I've taken a load of photos of the roof, i'll try and post them over the weekend.

Cheers for the note on the rocker cover - you're right. I'll have a faff later - shorten/move the filler i guess. I haven't fitted the commer tappet cover so i'll need to incorporate some form of breather as well. not sure if i'll recirculate this into the carbs (kinda hard without and airbox) or just aim some pipe at the floor / fit a catch tank.

just want to get it running now - thanks for the encouragement!

have left some alloy 1725 notes on transitvanman's page

I've done the prop cut and shut a couple of times on other projects, try not to get the flange so hot that you melt the dust covers and melt all the grease out (opps!). I found a jumbo size pipe cutted allowed me to remove the old flange fairly squarely, shame the back of the H120 flange isn't flat.

I'm going with a vented catch tank

What are you doing about the heater?
As in a water supply for?
This is causing me some probs. I think I'm going to tee into the top hose to feed the valve and retirn into the therm housing (i'm using the smaller commer not the Holbay pump for HP reasons).
Any better ideas?

Cheers

There is a boss on the head (in the same place as on the commer head) that you can drill and tap (3/8 BSP?) for a water outlet/inlet. Haven't quite got that far yet - but will post some photos of what i mean. I'm keeping the commer pump/thermo housing too.

Any chance of some photos of your installation so far?

OK I will have a look at that. Cheers.

Just fitted a hi torque starter as the standard one was feeble (I'm getting pretty good compression on overhauled motor), heavy, large & too close to the Holbay manifold.
Ive had so many starters slowly (sometimes just a few weeks)internally degrade having being exposed to too much heat following changing the manifold that I do this generally now on my projects.

Needles & filters. Then manifold & starter :)

I will post pics soon.

Cheers

You can see at exactly what point i got utterly bored of making curtains...

Wiring has mostly been keeping me busy this week.

really should have made some notes as i went along - and using more than six different colours of wire might have helped!

one of these wires is the one i'm after!

plumbing getting there - the hose i bought was the wrong size - so had to steall this posh stuff from another project (these were to be oil lines for the alpine).

looking good there sam :p the alpine donated to a worthy cause ;)

Wiring would keep bomb disposal team guessing for weeks 'cut the red one, no the blue one'[:0]:)

Love the quilted roof - have only seen that on the sides before, and intrigued by your little skylight - looks sweet and will be great for venting the cooking (condensation from the gas -not saying you're a bad cook you understand:I:D)
