rats nest

well, not alot to look at to show ive done anything,
but i found a decent pair of 205/65/15 tyres down the
side of my shed this morning, ( as you do ! :D ) so
nipped down to my local tyre place and had them put on
the rears, does'nt look like much , i just wanted to get
an idea of the drop with just tyres alone.

about 3" up to now [:0] also wire brushed all the bolts etc
that will need undoing and soaked them in oil in preperation for
undoing. ive been looking up abit more about the rear end,and
i think i might poss be going with the toughened up mono spring
idea, which hopefully might mean alot less messing about doing
refabs etc,and hopefully another 3" drop ? :D
havnt had a price quote yet though ! [:0]

only this pic at the mo, nothing exciting :p

im going the rover v8 auto route and i was hoping to get away without cutting the first crossmember where the handbrake bracket is, but this unfortunatly only leaves 45" from that crossmember to
the prop flange on the axle :( not alot, so it will have to go and
i'llhave to figure away of sorting the handbrake out as i still want
it to work the front wheels :D

very pleased with the underneath though,no rot thanks goodness, just
on the body. :(

had a good crack at the 'ol girl yesterday, got the
front suspension dropped out and then made a start on
the rear end ! [:0]

luckily, thanks to soaking the bolts in oil and more than
likely, chris replacing all the old bushings with new ( phew :D )
everything came apart quite easily. :D:D

1pm and its all out.

im at the debating stage at the mo as to which axle to
go with, the original with leaves mounted underneath the
axle, or go the jag irs route like admin, but that also
depends if it will still go low enough with that set up.

so, still dont look like ive done much, i would like to
somehow tip it on its side while its at this stage so i can
do the odd chassis repair and clean it all up and paint it.
just not sure yet how to get it over with out doing major
damage to the bodywork. ! :D

Now you have took the axles off you have made it very difficult to tip it over as the axle would have acted as your pivot points when using a car roller etc. The only choice you have now is to build two cross braces that bolt in to the rear door apature and front where the bulkhead would go with a tube in the centre. This way you could pass a pole right through the van to fit to two a frames standing on the floor. Think it was Panky that did some drawings on here a while ago to make this kind of idea up. Ive done a search but cant find it. Im sure someone will find it;)

[)] yeh i know, once i got the rear axle out,i was having
a good look underneath and thought i could do with it being
on its side.

if i go the rear leafspring rout, then i'll do it once the
axles back in. :D

GOT A MATE OF MINE COMING OVER TO TAKE A LOOK AT
FABBING UP SOME MOUNTS FOR THE LEAFSPRINGS TOMORROW,
SO LOOKS LIKE I'LL HAVE TO WAIT TIL ALL THE SUSPENSION
IS BACK ON AND THE FLIP IT ON ITS SIDE ! [:0]

This is what ive got:

There brilliant but expensive, havent bolted my panel van on to it yet going to have to make some adapters. The wheels have to be in line with each other front and back and as you know the commer has a very narrow beam on the front;)

Lodown I have found the cab floor and w/arch mats, they are not brilliant but relatively still in tact, do you want them??

hi chris, nah its ok mate but thanks for asking.

should be cutting the front coils down tomorrow, got some
shorter beetle shocks ready as well,so with a bit of luck,
hopefully have front end lowered by next weekend.

back axle is up at my mates having plates made and welded to
mount the leaves under the axle. ( cant wait ! :D )

just won a rover v8 and auto box yesterday but cant collect
that until next saturday, so once the 'ol girl is back on
her wheels, there's gonna be a bigger hole in the middle of
floor,:D ( and not one caused by rot !! :p:D )

oh,and as a twist of fate, somebody came over today to collect
a rnr bed and she was watching the commer too on ebay and was
going to bid but didnt get back in time !

This is sounding very interesing[8D]
Why didn't you just flip the axle?

Dunno, but it's been done many times. Not sure if the brake back plates will need re-positioning but that shouldn't be too hard and it might be difficult topping the diff up with oil:I.

yeh that was my thought too,

i just been flicking through the tech threads and found
the one with sunny citrus van, bobby seemed to have flipped
his, so it seems ok for him ?

the only other thing would be that every thing will be running
the opposite way, would'nt have thought the brakes would be a
problem and the diff has been replaced and not used that much.
who knows ?

i rang the chap who's got my axle and he took a look at it and
came to the same oppinion as us that the only poss problem
would be topping the diff up. !
he hasn't made a start yet so unless anybody knows of a reason
why you cant run a flipped axle, then it will be coming back. :D

[8D]

It's been done before and it's the simplest and cheapest way, but not the best. But we're talking re-shaped and re-tempered or replacement springs so it won't be cheap. The diff clearance to the floor might be a problem but adjustable shackles have been used in the past. It just worries me that with all that V8 power you are going to have a set up that is a compromise at best.
