R2 the battle bus

Well the filming was a stonking success. It was for a uni finals and they were all lovely and very professional with oodles of kit. I’m not allowed a copy of the film but I think it will be on youtube eventually.

Once I had freed up the clutch and fixed the water leak which was a loose hose on the radiator (I had removed it to flush system in the summer and I think with that cold snap the metal had shrunk enough to cause it as it didn’t leak all summer. Just needed tightening up) I decided that the best thing was get it to site well before the shoot as the last thing I wanted was to break down or it snowing. Lucky the garage was only 20mins away and the directors dad let me put him on his driveway the weekend before so only had to travel 50 metres. It was the first time driving him in the dark. Weather wasn’t brilliant so glad I had fitted the led rear lamps. I had also fitted led bulbs in sidelights which were actually indicator wattage so nobody plowed into me. I suppose I will just have to get use to the future fame and fortune lol.

Well my in 10 years time plan apart from finding land for a simple campsite was to replace the battlebus with possibly a caravan. I haven’t had a car for about 16 years so it would be quite nice to be able to do 70mph and in relative quiet. I have since realised that in 10 years time my camping buddies will probably be too old anyway. So lucky I have decided to bin the caravan idea and keep the battlebus.
I am going to do the gearbox upgrade when Tim can find time. That will hopefully mean that I can go 50 or 60 without the engine exploding. My only other option is to make lighter furniture. Has anyone use balsa ply? I think poplar ply is light too? I haven’t looked into it thoroughly.
Apart from fitting a v8…… lol

Wise decision:) Bonnie our Jennings will cruise at 55/60 all day (as long as there are no hills ;) ) and she is on a standard engine with SU conversion and overdrive. Not exactly quiet but we can hold a conversation while on the move.

Have you got the Lexus gearbox?
I got carried away on the way home doing 50. There was a bit of juddering and noticed that the temperature was higher than normal (misfiring?) so 40 with the heater on sorted it out after about 15 minutes. Everything about the battlebus is perfect for me except it would be nice to go at a slightly faster pace. 45 is really the top speed for the engine.

Ooh so with 6 gears I could do 70. I wouldn’t be able to stop and would probably bounce off the road in a ball of flames. The urban myth of jato rockets and pickup truck springs to mind lol

Tim is being extremely helpful as there is no way I can get up to him to do the swap. My local mechanic is game. It’s now potentially down to storage if Tim needs my bits to alter etc
