No chance. Going to sort Peggy first. Then get another gearbox out of the lock-up and swap 'em over. That should tell us if this 'box needs to go back to Dennis.

Soaked the m/c overnight and have just started strip down. 1st thing was to remove the circlip retaining the push-rod. It broke and most is corroded into the groove and won't budge. Looks like I won't be re-building this one!

Youve given up to early baz;) Get a dremel on it cut or grind the clip in two so it comes out the grove then sand blast the hole thing, parts wash it, see if its pitted inside if not to bad, get a small bore honer on the drill, fit new seals and bolt it back on.;)

I must be doing something wrong - I found it to be a right awkward jod to get off and back on again:I That top bolt is a bugger.

Top bolt was awkward. Couldn't see how to remove the cotter-pin at first, thought I'd have to remove everything! Then realised there were holes in the side pieces to poke it through!

Somewhere I've got a spare clutch m/c for my Singer Vogue which I think is the same. If I can find it I'll see if it's a match and if so give it a try. Then this one can be set aside for a future project.

Right, got away from work early today but still on-call so can't get down and dirty with Peggy in case I have to rush back in. So I went to the lock-up to see if I could find the spare m/c. 5 mins later it was in my hands. It was supplied by Speedys a couple of years ago (three and a half!) for Madge, my '67 Singer Vogue. When it arrived the piston would not move a mm, even when I pushed the push-rod against a wall and put all my body weight on it. It's a pattern part with a plastic reservoir made for, amongst others, the Peykan! Anyway, I called Speedy and told them about it. They sent a 'normal' metal bodied one which worked fine. I asked about sending the faulty one back and they said not to bother, "Just put it in the bin".

Well, not one for throwing stuff away I just put it in the lock-up and forgot about it, which brings us back to today. Got it home and the piston was still stuck. I removed the push-rod assembly then dowsed the top of the piston and the other end with some silicon lubricant.

I left it for 30 mins then holding the push-rod against the top of the piston, started to tap lightly on the push-rod. I slowly increased the 'weight' and after about a minute the piston moved. I could then push it down and look at the bore. There was slight surface rust at the very top which must have 'fused' the piston in place. I was able to get some scotch pad in there and clean it up. Liberal doses of the silicon lube and cleaning out has removed all traces of the rust leaving a smooth bore.

I'm going to use some compressed air to remove the piston (it won't come out with tapping) and give the seals the once over and also give the bore a final check. If all is well I'll re-assemble and fit it to Peggy. I'm making the huge assumption here that the m/c for the 1725 Vogue is the same as for the 1725 Commer!

Just got a repsonse from pastparts re a new m/c. They will have to restore my old one, they insert s/s bores so no more rust. Total cost for a PB clutch m/c inc postage and VAT is about £75. Not too bad I suppose. I'll still see how I get on with the Peykan one.

OK, spent yesterday afternoon scrabbling about under Peggy after I had swapped her old push-rod onto the new master cylinder. That top bolt is an ex-wife I can tell ya! Anyway got it all on then realised I needed a new copper washer for the banjo joint. Shot off to Halfords and found a pack of assorted sealing washers mostly useless to me but two copper ones seemed the right size. Went to pay for them then realised I was in my grubby gear so no cash! Put the pack back then shot home for the money, went back, got the pack, got home.

As an aside, and to explain why work effectively stopped at this point, whilst driving I looked over my shoulder a few times, as you do;). This resulted in my neck strength disappearing and the feeling that my neck was broken and my head was about to fall off my shoulders! Somewhat disconcerting. Soon realsied I must have strained some neck muscles while twisting and groping about under Peggy. So decided not to do any more until the neck was rested. Woke this morning expecting a very stiff neck but it's mostly OK thankfully. No time to sort Peggy today but tomorrow morning I hope to connect the banjo and bleed her clutch again. Then, if it all works, we should be back on the road.

Weather reports are pants! Just gone out to finish off the clutch stuff and it's raining! Not going to scabble around under Peggy in the rain so we'll see how the weather does tomorrow.
