I don't think any amount of filter cleaning will improve the draw on the solenoid - if it's knacked it's knacked :I But it's well worth cleaning the filter anyway.

The heat in the inlet manifold is the biggest cause of commer troubles [xx(] they can be seperated for a big improvement ;)

Would that be the SU conversion? This is something I definitely want to do at some point. Lovely carb the SU.

We had Peggy back up on the ramps today.

Drained the gearbox and removed the solenoid. It was moving when connected to a battery but not by much. After a bit of shake, rattle and roll plus some more energising with the battery and it seemed to be moving a tad more and slightly more 'vigorously.

We removed the base plate and cleaned out the mesh filter (which was pretty clean anyway). Didn't have the right tools to remove the other filter and relief valve so left them in place. Put it all back together and re-filled with oil - still didn't work on the way home so I think I'll call Speedy's tomorrow for a new solenoid.

Also fitted the electric fuel pump and wired it up ready for the big switcheroo from mechanical to electric power. Unfortunately I underestimated the amount of hose I'd need for plumbing the rear end so will have to get some more for the front section.

Took some pics as well:

Peggy used to be burgundy which is really handy because that's what I want her to be again!

Well she looks mighty solid underneath, just a bit of heavy surface rust. Where did you get that neat fuel pump??

It's a Facet. From here http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280480654782

The rubber mounts were bought seperately from here http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=390167993584

The undersides will get some Dinitrol in the summer (warmer so it flows better).

I have a facet too! I thought black and silver plates were only allowed up to K plate? Live n learn

Used to be pre 01.01.73 registered could wear them. Now I believe they use the same cut-off as the tax exempt cars, so if it was manufactured before 01.01.73 you're OK.

Cheers Baz, I've not seen Facet pumps like that before. The one on my VW is the block type and it's noisy... I must get round to rubber mounting it.

I have used the same pump on Dolly, to go with the SU conversion and manifolds from Tim :p Runs really sweet, can't wait to drive her to the mot station Friday :)

New J Type solenoid ordered from Speedy's. Hopefully that will be the cure. If not I'll look at the internal filters and pressure relief valves.

Peggy's looking pretty damn good to me !

I've been looking at these new style Facet pumps too for our Holbay setup - I understand that carbs handle around 4 PSI max but if I remember the lower pressure Facet options are something like 1-3 PSI or 3-4 PSI. I'm also thinking of adding a Filter King regulator, so should I go for the 3-4PSI option ?

I'm going with the 3-4 psi one. If it overfuels the carb I'll then fit a regulator. Should be OK though.

:I Dont know if I am missing something here but what is wrong with the standed mechanical pump [?]

It's mechanical:I
One big plus on the Commer is that you can re-rout the fuel pipe to the carb side of the engine bay and do away with all those vapour locking problems.

th_killin.jpg

And the leccy pump will help to get the fuel past those vapour locks too.
