Fixed the handbrake on my Vectra this morning and had an hour to kill before work so got Peggy up on the ramps to finish off the leccy pump plumbing.

Ended up using 4 in line filters as it was the easiest way to mate the standard 6mm fuel lines with the new 8mm ones. Once all was connected up I switched her on, it took a while for the fuel to get through but once it did she started and ran perfectly.

I routed the line around the front of the rad as described by others. No time to take pics or to go for a test run but will try to get some pics this weekend.

Also fitted a couple of spotlights last week and have some LED bulbs to replace the brake/tail-lights.

Just realised I should have left her up on the ramps so I could fit the replacement o/d solenoid. Never mind, maybe tomorrow - although I've got to be at work for 11 - maybe I'll just park her up on the ramps and do the work on Sunday, before work at 11 again!

When I ran it up this morning there were no signs of overfuelling at the carb. This may be due in part to the slight restriction offered by 4 in-line filters and the extra couple of metres of fuel line though! ;)

Halfords do it, you can have it cut off a roll to whatever length you need. In my case I had to cut it as the 16yr old girl serving me couldn't do it. Watching her trying to measure out 3m of the hose using a retractable tape measure was a scream. After a couple of mins watching her struggle I pointed out that she only needed to measure 1m three times. [}:)]:D

I had a similar experience with the same retailer, the pretty little thing was trying to cut 1/2" heater hose with a pair of scissors - luckily I had my Swiss army manicure set to hand:I

Fair play to the girl who served me, she did try. Many others would have gone off asking for someone else to serve me. I also had to tell her where the roll of hose was kept behind the desk and where the hose cutters were!

Took a couple of pics this morning, not the prettiest installation but it seems to work OK.

6mm outlet from tank connected to 8mm hose with filter no.1

8mm hose goes round the back of the tank to filter no.2 and the pump then continues round the other side of the tank........

......to filter no.3 where it re-connects to the standard 6mm line which runs up to the engine bay.

At the engine bay the original 6mm pipe no longer goes to the mechanical pump, it now goes to filter no.4 from which 8mm hose goes forward and around the front of the rad............

.............. before coming back into the engine bay on the other side and into the carb. The roughly 50cm long 6mm plastic fuel line has been pushed all the way into the 8mm hose and two clips were used on the hose to make sure there were no leaks - all seems good so far.

Hi Baz, I guess the tubing routes around the top of the rad just above the matrix? I've been meaning to get round to doing this job for the best part of 6 months!
 
It's actually a bit longer than that and goes forward and down a bit before coming back. I wanted it away from the heat of the rad and more in the 'airflow'.

Nice one Baz, It may have been easier to run the pipe straight to the carb side of the engine rather than go all the way around the engine but it's got to be better than original the way you've done it[^]

mine goes to the side of the rad where the wiring loom and speedo cable goes then follows the floor pan round and back through where the accellerator cable goes to the carb, once again, like Bazz to keep well away from the heat:)

Update:

Overdrive - Andy popped round last night and loaned me his slim 1" spanner so I could change the solenoid. At 8.30 this morning i was under Peggy and had the old one out in a jiffy. The new one however did not want to push in far enough for the threads the bite! After a bit of confuddlementary contemplation and cogitation I noticed that the tiny roll pins holding the new solenoid together were sticking out of the body by about 1mm each. On the the old one they were flush to the body. So after some gentle taps they were all flush and I tried again. Success! it screwed up nicely no longer fouling on the O/D. Unfortunately the spanner was still too fat to tighten it properly. Was the new solenoid different? Out it came and I compared the two, both were identical to each other. Then I saw the copper washer on the old one! Ooops! Fitted it to the new one and it all went together nicely. Phew!

Took her for a run and while in fourth I flicked the O/D switch..................nothing.....bugger.

Tried again in both 3rd and 4th ........... still nothing.

Then I thought about the inhibitor switch and how it might need adjustment. This time I held the gearstick hard back in fourth and flicked the switch..............................SUCCESS!!!!! It worked, same in 3rd. So looks like I need to adjust the inhibitor switch, or perhaps bypass it altogether? Maybe there was nothing wrong with the old solenoid after all?

So having sorted that I can also report that she runs absolutely fine with the new fuel pump etc. Forgot to try a hot start so no news yet on whether it's improved.

I also filled her up with fuel, to find where it was leaking before. As I suspected the tank seem fine, the fuel is coming out near the filler end of the pipe but high up inside. Hard to see exactly whilst lying on the garage forecourt with one hand pumping the fuel! Managed to get nearly a full tank in her this time. So maybe new filler to tank hose, or perhaps the filler is rotten?

Also, while looking for a hidden compartment storing a jack (see my Jack wanted thread) I found a fresh water carrier and a silver screen sun blind and a front cab cover - both have been deployed - pics tomorrow if I remember.

All-in-all a productive morning!
