Mine's on all the time, no speed controller. It was trial and error with the fan belt, I was back an too to Halfords a few times:I I'm pretty sure it's a 975. You will find that you will run out of adjustment with the standard Commer alternator adjustment bracket, I used the one of the Rapier engine bent to accept the slightly different alignment on my application. It's tight to get the belt on and the alternator just touches the engine mount on full adjustment - one of my jobs in hand is to modify the alternator to block mounting bracket so it changes the center of swing to give better adjustment, if you catch my drift:I

Hmmm I will measure the belt length tomorrow. Will keep an eye on voltage gauge, what with leccy, fan, water pump and fuel pump as well as split charge and the usuals. Must be gaining at least 10bhp with all this not running off the crank and cam...lol

The extra loading on the alternator did worry me especially on one dark rainy evening after Commerfest. We were heading into the Dales - on top of the lekky pump the lights, wipers, heater blower were all sucking power and I was watching the voltmeter slowly dropping into the red and the wipers struggling, I decided my next investment would be an uprated alternator:I Now cold dark rainy nights hold no fear and the wipers are almost mannic in their quest to clear the screen:)

A funny old day! The water pump is all ok and pumpy with no leaky! The gearbox is a cause for concern. The rattly whirring is back! This is only happening when the engine is in neutral and my foot is off the clutch. This happened last year and went when I fitted a new thrust bearing. Slave cylinder is on correct, and no play in the actuating arm. Both slave and master cylinders are less than a year old. Any ideas?
Still not managed to get the gear linkage set up proper yet...no third forth or reverse.....I hate that job...lol
And I put the newish thrust bearing on the new box

Did you renew the spigot bush/bearing in the end of the crank?

I am not a person, I am a number, 395 actually......Be seeing you!
If I told you I was a pathological liar, would you believe me?

Did not replace the spigot bearing as it was fine last week, when the gearbox came off. Clips were in place...I know this as I broke one and took one from my gearbox collection lol.

Have you tried gripping the thrust bearing lever when it's running, it may rattling a bit:I

Dropped the box....again! And the forks that hold the thrust bearing had too much play, meaning that with no pressure from the clutch, the input shaft was rubbing against the inside of the thrust bearing. Will get the box back in tomorrow! Phew!

Blimey, that gear box has been on and off more times than the landing light:I

For future reference I have found that a Qba750 fan belt is the correct size for my setup, just for the crank pulley and alternator when running the electric water pump

In out, in out, in out. Put the gear box back in....and it is still noisy so.......I took it out again and put the old one back in, and its fine!
On further inspection, there is a bit of play in the input shaft and it feels a bit grauchy, when you turn it. Oh well!

Oh no:( Are you going to swap the input shafts over or run it without OD for now.

It's running without overdrive box for now....I have another commer box and the input seems ok on that. Don't want the van off the road over summer. On the plus side, my record for a gearbox change now stands at 2 hours....lol
I will have a look at the od box when I am not sick of the sight of it...ha ha ha

Is that 2hrs for the complete swap Nick? I'll be doing mine again sometime soonish...I'll time it:D:D ...although I think this time it will also be changing from a D-type to a J-type:)

Yep, from running with one gearbox removing it, fitting a second gearbox...I was lucky though and didn't need to adjust the gear selector. 22 bolts to remove I think.

and that bloody fiddley little split pin thingy on the linkage arm lol........my jaw kills every time from trying to hold the torch lol
