A commer gearbox came up on eBay...I thought for a tenner it would be rude not to! Picked it up today and compared it to what I already have. It looks like I will need to shorten the prop shaft by 3.5 inches...does this sound about right? Also I can't see any differences between the commer gear box and the "arrows" one I bought. The gear box casting has the holes in the same places, so perhaps it was described wrong in the listing. I know Panky said the arrows boxes were canted over, but can't see any evidence of this.

The Commer bellhousing is ribbed, the Arrows one is a smooth and longer casting, hence the gearbox input shaft is longer too. Its only canted over a few degrees, compare the positions of the starter motor housing and you'll see the difference.

I think the earlier commer boxes with the course splines had a smooth bellhousing? Sorry came over all nerdy there...

Grrrrr! Everything was going so well. Overdrive gearbox transferred to commer gear box fine. Problem is, the overdrive won't press home and there is a half inch gap. Nothing to do with the mainshaft. Haynes manual says that if this happens the planetary gears are out of line. Insert screwdriver and turn anti clock. Doesn't eleborate on where to turn and how much....any ideas?
Hmm, did you take the speedo drive out? I had a little bit of jiggling to do but it went on in the end - if I remember there's a washer right down the end of the OD housing (spose it should be on the shaft) if it's out of line the shaft won't go through 'thole:I

Apparently there are two sets of splines for the mainshaft to slot into. Haynes reckons mine are out of line, and i can't get at them.
Yes, the input shaft engages with the first set of splines.
Tried twiddling, tried oil filter straps to try and turn the input and out put shafts opposite ways. Going to take it to my friendly garage tomorrow. Spent a whole day trying to sort it...and am defeated!

Haha haynes... There are a few times i could have told them where to stick the screwdriver! I havnt done this job so not much help im afraid but i have always found with gear boxes its usually down to some small alignment issue. Good luck with it. Ods are brilliant!
