Fiddle sticks again....the shame of it. On way home on an AA truck. White smoke out of breather, along with a nasty rattle....any one have an engine spare?

Check the head gasket first[xx(]

I added oil to the bores and rechacked the compression, all at 140 now.....piston rings at least then.
Silly question time!!!
How similar are the rapier and commer engines? Will a rapier ally head fit a commer engine? DOes any one have any spare engines?
How easy are rebuild parts to get hold of?
At least I will be looking to hone the block and fit new rings. As there was a nasty rattle, I am suspecting that more is amiss, and may need new pistons, rebore, and if I am doing that then I might as well get the crank reground, and new main and big end bearings. I am a pittle p*ssed of at present,as the van will be off the road now and miss the height of summer, but we accept tha fact that we were lucky to do the massive road trip that we did just after we bought her. HoHum!!!!

Very philosophical of you:I. I'd check out the usual sources for bits - Martin, Speedies etc - are you lucky enough to have a good old fashioned engineering company close by. If you but another engine you will be taking pot luck, but probably cheaper. I know the cam is different in the Rapier engine, not sure if the head will bolt straight on to a Commer block:I

Oh no :( check out the valves and pull the head before you comit to anything else.
Alloy head will fit BUT you will need the matching cam and manifolds too ;)

Thanks for the tip panky. Will be picking that engine up next week hopefully. It's not the ally head. It turns over, so will give it a quick check over first, swap the cam etc etc.

Engine picked up, stripped to short engine. Looks ok,no lip on the bores, though a spark plug was missing and the cylinder is a bit Orange. Looks to be a pre-engaged.starter, will the fly wheel be compatible with the new later starter and solenoid combo I have?

Just swap your old one (four bolts) and then you will be sure[^]

Cheers Panky...again. block stipped to crank and pistons. Was having nightmares about getting the flywheel off...I own a mini, even got the flywheeel puller out...not needed, just like a mini engine but bigger.
Clean up time!!!

Right...a little update. The engine I bought, I am now assuming that this is a 1500cc, it has flat top pistons and longer conrods. Bu**er bug*er B*GGER. Whipped the head off the engine in the van. All the pistons are proper coked up, the bores aren't scored, you can move at least one of the dodgy pistons side to side in the cylinder, so piston rings fubard at least!!! The cylinder head looks to be fine....I am at a loss of what to next lol.
Waiting for photobucket and I will post some XxXx nasty pictures up.

Didn't the add say it was off of a 1725 Rapier
1500 and 1725 have the same bore but the 1725 has a longer stroke, that would mean shorter con rods - so you new engine sounds like a 1725 :)
Stroke for 1500 71.6 mm
Stroke for 1725 82.5 mm
