My New Baby!!!

It's time to think about the next step of the van resto. I am thinking windscreen surround, peak and roof guttering. From the diagram below can any one shed any light as to what profile repair pieces I will ned to make for the roof guttering. The first four relate to the repair panel cross section and the second (numbered) relate just to the profile of the type of return fold needed on the actual guttering. Cheers

'D' looks about right to me but with a fold on the bottom of the gutter to sit under the flange on the side panel. And somewhere in between 3 and 4 for the fold, more like what you've drawn in 'D'.

Just to mess things up for you even more I think the bottom edge of the gutter should have a right angled return on it so it's the bottom of a sandwich of roof, side and gutter panels:)

Of course it all depends how much metal is actually left to weld to;) OFCOL:)

Lol...not much left John.
Our Welsh commer trip was fun. Good to see the usual rabble rousers and meet some new faces. We took a detour on the way home and spent the rest of the week in France. The van behaved and the modifications really came into their own. As usual the van threw toys out the pram when we got back to England...the carbs had worked loose. Just needed tightening up... obviously avoiding touching the ehaust manifolds..ouchy.
I may have sourced a caravan awning at a steal of a price. Its 2.2m long by 2m wide. Thinking of getting it and attatching it to the side of the van. It would mean fitting an awning strip to the roof....any one tried this? Or don't think its a good idea?

The only problem I can see with the caravan awning is that it might not be a 'drive away' type with a frame to support it without the van in place - or a zippy up wall to close up if you want to go out in the van for the day. Once it's up your stuck:I

I wouldn't recommend a wind out awning on the pop top - they are fairly heavy and would act like a sail in the wind!

Better to fabricate some brackets that would allow it to sit correctly off the gutter/metal roof - see examples for other vans

Cheers for the advice. This awning is the lighter version...more like a pull out blind...there are some exact same ones in your link, so I must be on the right lines.

Blummin heck! Is it really that long. Current status is rusty! Intensive care rusty! Fighting the rust all the way.

That's what happens when Josie spills one of her cocktail in the wardrobe:eek:
Great to see you getting stuck in:)

Wow....was it really that long. I am guessing I am over halfway through the rust removal now. As well as structural rust in the riggers, the bottom few inches of the side panels were shot, along with a good six inches of the outer edges of the floor....so not much connecting the sides of the van to the floor apart from good old gravity. Now I find out that the tops of the side panels along with a good inch of the edge of the roof is also rotten. So I am working my way around the van replacing all guttering and rot. Merry Christmas yes...that is structural bubble wrap

Great stuff Nick, I admire your fettling skills and it looks like you have a bit more fettling to do but you've done a brilliant job:cool:
I particularly like the silver screen tint you've developed:D
