Modified historic Vehicles - future use!

Yep bring em round Tim and I will cut the bastard things up to get them out of everyone`s way, dont forget to bring Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and 007`s DB5 with you ;)

Bloody Commer`s!

So as the law stands now anyone, without any mechanical knowledge, like me, could decide to buy a jaguar engine and fit it into a vehicle like Lulu, which is not designed for speed, take it for a spin at 100 mph, lose control, crash into some poor driver coming the other way and kill all the occupants of the other vehicle, children included. I understand that most of the members of this forum would never just make them sort of modifications without upgrading the other necessary parts but Commer owners only make up a small percentage of classical owners and I would dare bet that there are some right nutters with very badly modified so called classical vehicles on the road.

Better chuck in Sammy Miller,s Ariel too

That is the point that I am making, I know my capabilities and I would never try to anything like that, leave it to the experts is what I think, but how many think that they have the capabilities and the knowledge to take on a mammoth task like that and then make a pigs ear of it and end up with a vehicle not fit to be on the road.quote:

Unfortunately Tim I don't have access to that information but what I do know is that just one death on the road, especially if it is a child is far too many, so my way of thinking is lets play it safe. When we buy a classic vehicle we know that they run at snails pace so if drivers don't want something that is slow then why buy a classical vehicle and modify it so much that it loses it's integrity and is therefore no longer a classical vehiclequote:

And just how are the experts going to do it if the EU legislation outlaws it ?

Les, there will always be idiots who do silly things to cars, whether modern or classic. I know of some who modify their cars illegaly, then remove the modifications at MOT time and put them back afterwards. This usually relates to loud exhaust systems.

The point of this proposed law is its draconian measures, which appear to be aimed at removing safe cars from the road, just because they are older than me. You say you do not like modifications, so it won't affect you, but will you be running Lulu on crossplies or radials? Will you have the engine adapted to run on unleaded? Will you have a standard exhaust sytem? Will you have rust prone brake pipes? The list of very minor safety related upgrades could go on. It is not all about speed.

If these measures are proposed because the MOT has been removed for pre-1960 cars, the answer is simple - reintroduce it! Regardless of the new proposal, how many owners of pre-1960 cars are going to get letters from their insurers asking for some proof of roadworthiness from an independant source, and will that cost less than an MOT?

Only my humble opinion of course but then it will be "what you see is what you get" and not a hare in a tortoise shell

Uk has the lowest number of road deaths in the world.

It,s not about speed, most mk2 Jags do over a ton, E- types 140+
Would they not be safer with modern suspension and brakes ?

Going too slow is a major hazard, people get impatient and risk silly overtaking. That,s why motorways have a minimum speed limit.

Slowing down is a major cause of accidents
our classics need to be able to keep up with modern traffic pull out & get up to traffic speed as per driving standards for the modern day driving test.

Chris you have hit the nail on the head with what you say.
Concerning Lulu I don't know what sort of tyres she will be running on or anything to do with the exhaust as I have left that in the hands of the expert Mr M. and I feel certain that anything he does is going to make Lulu safe for me and other road users.
But as you said, and that is the point that I am trying to get across, not everyone is an expert.
Reading the postings on here I would say that the majority of Commer owners are responsible users who know what they are doing and are quite capable of doing alterations but as we acknowledge Commer users are in a minority of classical vehicles on the road, that's why we are so possesive about them, but I would hate to think about some of the modifications done to other classics by owners who think they are experts but have probably the same mechanical knowledge as me.

New one to me that Tim.As far as I know there is no minimum speed limit on our motorways, there is of course a maximum limit.quote:

There is no legislation that states a minimum limit, but the point is you can cause a hazard and be prosecuted for driving too slowly on the motorway. Would a totally original 1926 frazer Nash be safe on the M1 ?

I don't know much about 1926 Frazer Nash but if you have one that you need test driving then I am your man for the job.quote:

Anyway a very good saying is that the most dangerous part of any vehicle is the nut holding the wheel and I remember when I had a Wolseley 9/99, ex scotland yard car, driving back from Birmingham to Worcester after a night ice skating and my girl friend of that time asked what speed we were doing. I glanced at the speedo and told her 107 mph, she then leaned right over in front of me and said "oohh let me steer I've never driven a car at over 100mph before" Needless to say that was the last date with her.

You are not allowed on the motorway with L plates
or a 49cc motorbike. If you drive too slowly you could be stopped
on any road! (what is the minimum cc? )

Neither do i, but i do know it would be safer modified with disc brakes and coilover suspension.
Take a good look at all those Gold Stars Les, 99% of people would not see that they are not 100% original, yet this law would make them illegal, and you,re quite happy with that are you?
