This place is soooooo fu@=;ng friendly and helpfull. Most forums are full of people venting anger or shemelessly advertising some ****e they want to rip you off with. Seems that cake will do the trick everytime on here:-o

Wow guys, thank you! I have just got back in after my first ever mechanical day (i was so proud of the first oil stains on my clothes!) and now i see we have some baking to do!!

A triple choc cake with cherries and nuts it is, with cream. And i think some tiffin.

I learnt a lot today, we got the electronic ignition on and wired up. It was fairly straight forward really. We also drilled some slightly bigger holes in the spray bar, when we took the rocker cover off it was a little dry so this will hopefully stop the knocking.

We wired up the electric aerial too, along with fitting the cd player and speakers.

Driving back home though i suddenly went through a patch of rather oily smelling mist. Worried i was on fire i pulled over and opened the engine bay to see a stream of oil burning off. I had missed a side screw on the rocker cover and the oil was squirting out [:0]. That was screwed in and i drove the rest of the way back with the engine cover open so i could check on it- i really dont recommend that, although i must have a tan now from the heat!

A thoroughly enjoyable day, i'm so glad we decided to jump in and give it a go ourselves (with some help) Its the best way to learn!

We are hoping to leave about 10.30am tomorrow, so expect us about 12.30pm?

Panky it was my sisters boyfriend, he has done quite a bit with cars - owns a Capri with a 2.0l Pinto engine as well amongst others. He is more engineer than mechanic, but was happy to help out!

You beat me to it! thanks for the pics, darn that tarty exhaust being all to up close and personal! I have to dash out now so will fill the gaps in tomorrow. however, i can safely say that Chris and Tim are so very very friendly and helpful. We really are so grateful. Thank you both :I:D

i will let jon fill in the gory details, but whoever fitted the engine put the exhaust right on top of the engine mount and its burned it right through [:0] and the engine collaped so the alternator was holding it up [V]
and the cake was fantastic, even if there was a couple of pieces missing :D

It's a shame some one has painted over all the rust & not done a very good job [V]some serious bodges [:(!]
but with some attention from Tim & some tlc over time she will be fine I have taken some photo's & if Jon & cara are happy for me to post them I will.

You have our permission and eager antisipation to upload as many photos as you want :p

As we left home to drive the 65 miles to chris's we smelt a bit of a strange smell coming from the engine, we thought at the time that it was a bit of spilt transmission fluid burning off. We continued, noticing a distinct lack of power down along the A1. At one point we were even overtaken by a pesky VW-so we knew are luck was running out! We began to overheat a little and our power lessened. Suddenly there was a big clonk and a massively loud noise. We thought is was the fan or gearbox.

After a look around and some help from the RAC it was seen that the fan was hitting the bottom pipe of the radiator. As Tim mentioned when the engine was put together, the exhaust had been placed to close to the engine mount, which burnt it away (funny smell was obviously burning rubber!) The engine then dropped and the problems began! Thankfully the alternator lodged itself onto the wishbone of the suspension and saved it from dropping further.

We were obviously on our way to see Chris and Tim so we cheekily asked if we could get it recovered to there so they could help with their kindness, expertise and knowledge! Thankfully they agreed and they are now rectifying the problems meaning an even bigger proper chocolate cake will be made for the visit back down!!
