hi baz, does a limo loose its reg when it gets stretched from a normal car ? beetle chassis get shortened and they dont loose thier reg, as long as you retain the chassis then that remains that car, whatever body style you want is then thats up to you, did a commer pickup louse its reg when it had a devon body put on the back of it ? you need to speak to DVLA about kitcars and get them to send you the info about donor cars, its that thick you will need to stay in for a week to read it then get an interperator to translate it into laymans terms, then it could be written on 1 side of A4 ! lol as my donor car is a porsche 928, theres no way i can get it registered as a porsche ! i know its my 1st commer van and people tend to think im a novice, but i been doin these projects a long time now, and just for your info none of the above apply to a motorbike, not even on right offs cat c/d and so on which is wierd ? ? ? but thanks everyone for the input i really appreciate it, i took some more pics today and will leave a link for you all to view later

Hi Mark, I'm not doubting your abilities or experience but a quick look here http://www.businesslink.gov.uk/bdotg/action/detail?itemId=1081997083&type=RESOURCES seems to suggest your plans MAY mean you have to go for an IVA (re-built, motor caravan and using parts from a registered vehicle). I just think it's worth double-checking in case an IVA is not something you want to do. Like I said before, hopefully you'll be OK.

Guidelines for radically altered vehicles - DVLA sheet, INF26

http://www.dft.gov.uk/dvla/forms/~/media/pdf/leaflets/inf26.ashx

3. Vehicles that have been radically altered.

This covers vehicles which are radically altered from their original specification, but which are not kit conversions.

In these cases, the vehicle components from the original vehicle will be given a number of points. To keep the original registration number, the vehicle must have eight or more points, which must include the original or new unmodified chassis or monocoque bodyshell.

If the vehicle has less than eight points, a second-hand or altered chassis, frame or monocoque bodyshell is used, the vehicle must have IVA, SVA or MSVA, whichever is appropriate, so that it can be registered. A ‘Q’ registration number will then be issued, (see section 7.)

The following points will be given to the original major components used.
n Chassis or monocoque bodyshell (body and chassis
as one unit) (original or new)* 5
n Suspension (front & back) 2
n Axles (both) 2
n Transmission 2
n Steering assembly 2
n Engine 1
*Direct replacement from the manufacturers
If there is evidence that two vehicles have been welded together to form one (also known as “Cut and Shut”), IVA, SVA or MSVA will be required. A ‘Q’ registration number will then be issued.

I would assume it would be a Q plate. Saying that, the Austin A35 will be on a Q Plate according to this.....;). It'll only get 7 points [xx(]

Hi Mark I've tried to understand why but keep coming up without an answer, Why would anyone want to get a vehicle as beautiful as a commer/dodge and then turn it into a mutant monstrosity and still want to call it a commer??? It's not going to have an original or copy, commer engine/gearbox/chasis or body. Beats me

Lulu, each to their own mate! If we all did and felt the same how boring would that be?

Jon,
Just wondering......if you did the A35 modifications piecemeal and had the V5 etc updated as you went along.......
i.e. fit new engine, get it registered as everything else is the same. This engine then surely becomes the car's engine. Then do the next bit and so on? Might work and keep it under the radar so to speak?

Not sure that the IVA applies to an old vehicle.
Just do what you want Mark, ignore the red tape rubbish [xx(]

Just as another point to throw in to the pot........
There is no iva etc for commercial vehicles which as a chassis cab it would be !
Also new limos do have to have an iva as its a altered mono but keep the reg as its only that change !

Applies to rebuilt vehicles according to the link above, also includes motor caravans so would appear
to apply.

yes I suppose you're right Bazzateer it's just that I'm a traditionalist and like to see things as they were intended. I'm not against some modernisation such as lowering them a bit but as far as I'm concerned that's should be the limit. When do they stop being commers and become something else.?quote:

When they remove the desire to own a Commer in any form
When Someone says to a VW owner 'Is it a Commer'
When you pay £10,000 for some thing that has been dragged out of a Peat bog after 30 years
When they remove the badge[}:)]

That's when you know we've become 'normal';)

wow i really seem to have stired up a real hornets nest, by suggestin to stretch a chassis by 1.2m, and whats wrong in making a brand new body to fit on the rear, as i stated before this is in profile to the coomer lines, not a straight boring flat panel like the devon had, so will enhance the beauty of the commers lines, and engine/gearbox transplants are an everyday occurance, as i stated before im sorry to all the purest out there, maybe you should stop using unleaded ? this camper is being made to my families requirements as its a bloody long drive to my wifes country (philipines) as i dont fly anymore (i was on a plane that nearly crashed) hence the supa doopa comma van-a

Not many purist to upset on here, but we do (not me :I)have a wealth of knowledge that we try to share including the boys in blue - and orange (AA)
No critisism intended just(hopefully) helpful advise:)

Mark, really.I don't know anyone on here who would critisize your plans.......there may be some who would have a different idea an prefer to keep the commer as original as possible but really??? I doubt there is any van with perfect originality?? and it would just be their opinion...everyone seems to respect each others ideas on here.....my dream would be to transplant a commer body shell onto a Rover P6 chassis and running gear and then instead of a pop top...transplant a doner car like the top half of an Imp or Sunbeam onto the roof instead ...(I'll never get around to it) but you go ahead mate, I'm sure your plan will be greeted with more interest and 'wow's' than 'boo's' ...good luck with it mate[8D]

maybe some of the people here should watch some of chip foose creations on overhaulin, in his words he takes the classics and changes them to how they should really look, modern technology enables us to do that, wise words ..... it makes me chuckle as the porsche 928 im using is only 6 years younger ! but if coach builders had the tech then as we do now then campers would look a whole lot different then, just look at motorhomes now ? i love all old classic cars bikes vans and trucks, i own 9 classic lambrettas, classic mini van, classic porsche 911, a classic BSA with side car, but i cant help but to make changes for the better, i guess im just gonna carry on in my work and i guess you all will see it at a show finnished at some time and then you can pass judgment, if carlsberge and porsche made a camper/motorhome .... then ide guess it would look like sommet what im doing !

this has to be the most ambitious plan for a commer to date;) and i am really looking forward to seeing if it all goes to plan:) good luck to you mark[^]
