Betty the Commer Pizza Truck Project.

Yeah I will be honest, I can't believe my luck with it, I paid £800 for it which some people might think it a lot but with how rare this is I couldn't even care and the smile on my face knowing that its all basically a new front cab once the conversions completed is going to be worth it for sure!

You could spend a lot more welding pieces in and it would never be as good and would rot through again. Good you’re doing a proper job

yeah this was my thoughts exactly, the back is made of fibreglass and all the rear floors literally solid, so if i fix up the front cab perfect for my use case. Getting the Pizza oven in a couple of weeks, then the plumbing then its off to the yard for the welding work and respray so im looking forward to it. Ive mocked up how I want it to look when finished and it looks the nuts, well I think it does! Heres what I did with AI.Betty Final edit for now 1.jpg

So I’ve done some plumbing this week!

After about 20 trips to screwfix and realising the good pumps pump was infact…shit. I got a better pump and now have hot running water!

Right guys it’s me again, so I’ve been attempting to drive Betty a little more and longer, I’m getting pops and bangs and all sorts of shit!

Looking at the Carb I’m pretty sure it’s a HIF44 I also think my needles fucked, seems like the previous owner was just running it with an air leak, as the valves were not capped off, well one was one wasn’t. If I have one capped and one uncapped the car will fire up and run, like shit. If I cap both like I have been told
It’s supposed to be, then it won’t fire up at all. I’ll upload some images and any pointers would be hugely appreciated. I ordered a new damper and needle today so hopefully once that comes I can do a full reset.

First off was there any oil in the dash pot? and make sure the float chamber vent is not sealed off.

I had oil in the dash pot. Pretty sure that the thinner vent, is the float chamber and since I capped that off it wont fire up, as soon as i take the cap off that it will start but runs rough as shit. So I'm now assuming that the fatter vent needs to be capped off, and then the thinner one needs to just be left like in the first image?

Ok so the thing is apparently a fuel overflow and by capping that its making the float chamber sealed off which is why its not starting, I think im starting to learn

The third image is correct with the vacuum line blanked off. I would remove the pancake filter as it does look quite dirty and won't be helping things. The forth image is the mixture screw and, contrary to the norm, turning it in (clockwise) gives a richer mixture. If nothing improved when you remove the filter try giving the mixture screw a turn in.

Ok thanks for the advice, I’ll do all that tomorrow and then wait for the new damper needle to arrive as I’m pretty sure my ones broken, I would love to find the person who actually tuned it. Then I might actually know what the hell to do properly once and for all!

I’ll also order a new air filter whilst im at it!

A K&N cone for a 1275 Mini is usually the filter of choice on this conversion.
Or this one, a bit cheaper than the K&N

It's a tight fit but they will go in.
Just ordered one of these along with a new breather pipe, yellow spring and a few other bits, I got in touch with that AC DODD chap and he contacted me via phone and we had a little chat and he gave me some advice on some bits to buy to get it running a little better so fingers crossed in a few days when it all arrives I will have a slightly better running motor!

Has anybody changed the Dizzy to an electric one and is it a simple job?

AC Dodd is THE man and the best for SU and dizzy advice. I've got a Powerspark dizzy fitted to both my Auto-Sleeper and Morris Minor and would recommend. Easy fit but some re-timing needed. Best to get their matching coil as well so not to accidentally overload the module.

Fingers crossed. Hopefully the end is in sight :)
To be fair the back is basically done, all the plumbing works done, paint works done, ive made my new gas door just havent fitted it yet due to needing to check some regs with my local gas engineer to do with the vents in the door. Then once i get the go ahead, shes off for welding work and respray and her new shiny face. This is why I'm now putting my focus into getting her running as smoothly as possible so I actually make it to the yard, its only about 15 miles but you never know! :)
