na it’s slightly wedged to the piston I think. I’ve tried getting it out but no luck. Think it’s a head off job. It came from the air filter! I went for a drive, got home to the below, took it all off and couldn’t find the nut, assumed the nut had fallen to the floor.

Reseated the air filter, drove absolutely fine for around 10 little out and about trips whilst doing the carb spring work.

On startup yesterday and was greeted with a bang bang bang so shut the motor off asap and here we are.

So my assumption it was wedged somewhere for ages without causing damage then has flown into my 4th cylinder! NIGHTMARE

Panky my Man, I’ve managed to get some solid work done today. Talk to me about gaskets, whilst I’ve got the head off I’m assuming I need new ones. Where’s the best place to get all the right parts, I’m also thinking of new rad pipes and potentially a thermostat housing whilst im at it.

I’m clearly not a mechanic so finding parts for someone like me is a nightmare.

It’s a 1725cc petrol. With an SU HIF44 carb setup.

I literally want all the gaskets I’m going to need along with anything else once I’ve got the head off tomorrow I’ll know if I need new valves and stuff

Here's a top hose to start you off

I actually measured up and got generic silicon hoses and Mikalor clamps to suit, fit and forget.

Gasket set here

Or if you prefer a copper gasket set

And carb to manifold gasket, you'll need a couple for one either side of the abutment plate

That lot should keep you busy.
Absolute diamond thank you, seems the standard gasket set is out of stock, would prefer a normal set rather than copper due to the age of the motor any other places do them ,

If you search for Hillman or Sunbeam (iron head) parts you should find something. But there's nothing wrong with the eBay set, every one I've fitted (and most people) has been a copper gasket.

In that case I’ll order in the eBay set. Thanks bud, you’ve helped me a shit ton! Once I’ve got the head off hopefully tomorrow I’ll take loads of pictures and ping them in here to see your thoughts. I’m hoping the engine will still be ok as I’ve read these engines are fairly bullet proof but we will see

You are most welcome.
Give all the fixings a good squirt of release oil the day (preferably several doses over a few days) before you take it apart - especially exhaust manifold and thermostat housing to head, these are the ones most likely to shear off because of rust.

I’ve got all that off already! Making pretty good progress just trying to find an old money spanner to fit the other sides head nuts, I’ve loosened the manifold side ones without snapping so fingers crossed it comes off ok! Will update you more come close of play!

Great work, looks like the engine has been well looked after.
I approve of the work bench:D
Cheers my next issue is finding a correct spanner for these fuckers!

The nuts out! Nothing looks bent but will be testing the valve seals on Monday when I’m back working on her.

It looks like there could possibly be some damage on the inlet valve on No 4, That's where the nut would have entered and chattered before it dropped in. Hopefully not

Plan is to really clean it all up Monday then assess what’s wrong. Hopefully like you say it’s ok, if I need to get some valves it’s not the end of the world
