Bazil's 1972 Commer PB

Haven't done much to the van recently. Completely missed the welsh meet deadline :(
Did move the van to a new workshop (thanks to bigred!)

Managed a couple of early mornings this week and spent the whole morning today on the van (thanks to the Mexican for his help) so now it is a bit further along than it was :)

I had better figure out what bits of rubber I need and start trying to get it running again!

Been tidying up bits and pieces of the van bodywork, still some hours to put in with the wet sanding.
Charged the battery and turned the key and the sound was as though there was no fuel getting through, a friend of mine started sucking on the dry fuel line and got the petrol to the carb and then it fired up first time! She runs really sweet too!

I now have the windscreen rubber, door seals, weather strips etc ready and waiting to go on as soon as the bodywork is finished. Thanks to Martin Maltas for the parts.

Another few early mornings and a good weekend and I think I will be booking an mot :)
 
Bit more progress...

Headlamp bowls in, indicators, wiper mech and grill gasket (from Mr Maltas).
New u clips for the indicators and stainless self tappers.
Headlamps are now bolted in with all stainless bits as my rivets were too short.

Going to use stainless fixings wherever I can if I can get hold of them, found a good supplier now which helps.
Number plates are ordered too, shouldn't be long now!
 
Very good idea [^] make sure you use some grease on the threads, and the next person to undo them won,t need a grinder :D

Yup, a good dose of grease went on. I fancied replacing them with titanium as I go but it was a case of trying to get the van sorted as soon as possible against finding a good supplier. Unf throws a bit of a spanner in the works!

Also found some sexy anodised bolts that are race spec / lightened etc... Bloody metric though[:(!]
 
Difficult to find Titanium bolts other than metric, and the cost is scary [:0]. It,s not the easiest of materials to make them from either.
Without really good HSS ground taps/dies forget it [B)]

Apex Fasteners in Slough do pretty much everything UNF in steel and Stainless - used by formula one teams amongst others. Just bear in mind that you shouldn't use SS for things like suspension bolts, as they're more brittle. You should be using normal Galvanised High Tensile bolts for these areas.
 
As Andy quite rightly points out, don,t use stainless for anything structural, not because it,s brittle, as it isn,t, quite the opposite
in fact. It has a very low yield point and high elongation, which means it will easily stretch an awful lot and lose clamping force.
Anything structural is best done with socket caps as they are either 10.9 or 12.9 tensile (as opposed to the 8.8 galv ones) and use stainless nuts :)

I have a problem with the lower grill. [?]
I know how the grill fits on, I have 5 j type clips that hold the trim on and I have the corner bits to join the top and bottom trim together on the joins. Now, at the ends of the straight part of the top trim, where it bends, there is a hole in the panel that is bigger than all the others. I don't appear to have anything that fits there (I am quite meticulous with storing and labelling parts) so I need help [:eek:)] I had a look at big reds commer and his has a bolt with a flat square washer thing under it, unfortunately this bit was rusty and I couldn't work it out. Is anybody able to help me with what I am missing?

The flat plates with bolts attached, go on the back of the top trim, the bolt then goes thru the holes and fastenes from the inside ;)

Been sorting out the heater box so I can fit the last grill and tidy up the cab:

Once heater flap was repaired I cut some foam that was about 1/2" thick and taped the ends to the flap and then ran tape lengthways to finish it. The tape I used was metal repair tape from halfords and it was perfect for the job.
