And so to oily bits
Both Bonnie and Harvey had an advisory on play in the main relay lever. Obviously not enough to fail but the little bit of wander you get while driving a Commer seemed worse after he pointed it out, probably my imagination but It had to be done - and so to work.
Somewhere in this grotty mess under Bonnie is a relay lever:I
Three ball joints and four bolts are all there is to undo.
Last ball joint about to be cracked
You can just make out the last bolt amid the grime.
It's out
and in bits
Old and new pin
New bushes pressed in making sure the grease grooves are correctly positioned. It was easy to get the old ones out using the head of the old pin as a drift.
The bushes need reaming once they are in place, luckily I had the right sized expanding reamer for the job
Finished article
and bolted in place
I haven't had a test drive to see if the wandering was my imagination but there definitely was slack in the old pin and bushes.

Harvey has had some attention lately as well. The MOT man mentioned that the spring shackles where getting a little close to the chassis, a sign that the shackle bushes were worn. A very cheap repair, easy to do and it made a noticeable difference in tightening up the rear end - and got rid of a little knock that happened now and again. soon got used to it though but worthwhile doing even though the old ones didn't look too bad. It got me thinking and I did the same on Ted the Traveller but used poly bushes on both ends of the springs - now that is a big improvement[^] Maybe next time I'll use poly bushes on the vans - in another 40 years

Hi Panky,Great job.
May I ask what type of press you have and what size drifts you mostly use on the Commers?.
I am planning to add a hydraulic press to my workshop so i can have a go at these jobs myself also.

I haven't got a press:I a big vice and a 2lb hammer usually does the job for me You'd be horrified to see my 'workshop' which consists of an ancient Black and Decker workmate holding plank with a vice bolted to it. Most of my tools are on the floor so I know where they are
