Thowman's PB

Put another 40 miles on Babs today in the rain. Nothing exciting happened other than the windscreen wiper falling off in the middle of a downpour and I got soaked going to retrieve it.

Still making funny noises when idling, but it seems to run ok.

Could the rattle be the timing chain?

Summer's here.....
So they say

I would, but you are being mean - especially as I was on a mercy mission to change someone's locks in their house.

Don't forget who's going to be towing Chez Baz in Sept!

Only if I get some new tyres on her before then!

You'll need to get a more comfy passenger seat in Babs as well!

Well, naughty Barbara is really testing my patience[:(!]. Having mistakenly thought that I had finally sorted evrything, I decided to take her for a run this evening down to Baz's place to have a curry as I have other things to do tomorrow and won't be able to go to Brands.

First, noticed that there was an oil leak, and quite a lot of oil was dripping onto my drive. seems I need to seal the fuel pump a bit better. Also, the rattling from the timing cover area is still there and I can see myself taking the radiator out again, for about the 8th time.

However, more annoyingly on the way to Baz's, the fuel starvation problem returned. Once again the engine was being starved of fuel when I had the throttle wide open for anything more than 5 seconds. I had put a new fuel filter on, so not sure where the rubbish getting into the carb might be coming from (assuming it is the same as before. In the end, on the way back, it was getting worse and worse and I limped off the a41 dual carriageway at a speed of around 35.

Once around town it was ok again, but there again I wasn't using much throttle. When I did put the new fuel filter on, it did take about a minute or two of turning the engine over for the fuel to get through to the engine again. Might there be a blockage in the tank or something?

Well, I am getting to the end of my patience with this machine. Every time it seems one step forward, and two back. Not sure if I am going to make it to blackpool, I'm afraid.

Andy :(:(:(:(:(

Sounds like your floatbowl is not filling up fast enough at speed. Best answer is buy an electric pump.

That is exactly the problem, but shouldn't the mechanical pump be able to do the job? I did consider an electric pump, but don't know if I am going to have time now to source and fit one.

Mech pumps are crap most of the time, they are prone to vapour lock as well (never usually a problem on a Commer :D)

Andy I had 2 filters between the pump and carb on smurf and crud was always finding its way through...are you sure the jet/s are not partially blocked?

Its a massive comfort having one of Tims tanks fitted[8D] it leaks everywhere but NO crud lol:D[}:)]:D

They all do that Colin ;):D

Have you checked the line between tank and pump for air leaks [?]

It's going on the ramp in the morning. Don't think there are any leaks on the fuel line. I cleaned the jets out on the carb in the last few days. Shall do the same in the morning. I guess I'll be looking for a faucet pump on next day delivery on Monday morning. Not really wanting to spend money on it at the moment, but don't really have a choice.

I've not had the problems with the fuel supply before now in the time I have had her. I have done an awful lot of work on this van for not much return. A trip to Reading; a trip to Leeds and back (on 3 cylinders on way back) and a one way trip to Wales.
