Thowman's PB

Having the right tools and extra pairs of hands certainly made the job easier than expected. It was taken out through the passenger door - quite easy really.

Panky's right Andy, got to have her ready to tow Chez Baz.

Baz can tow his own trailer tent to all of those imp meets! [8D] Commer meets might be a bit different however......

Right. Taken the engine apart. Notable issues. Firstly the top piston ring on #1 was in two pieces. Secondly, and most importantly the #3 big end had gone.

Big end:

My question is that there seems to be a small ridge in each of the bores. Looking at the photos, do you think I can get away without a rebore? I don't really want to go to the expense of having this done if I really can get away with it. I have another crank that is already prepared ready to go in place of the one in the engine, and if possible I'd like to not spend any money - as I don't have much at the moment. So, engine experts - what do my bores look like? Once the big end went, I was getting a lot of smoke out of the breather - would that be usual - or would the broken piston ring be causing this? I was getting good compression on all cylinders prior to the big end going.

Looks like you will have to get another set of rings, at least. which means you will have to give it a hone as a minimum. Without miking up the bore to measure the wear its difficult to say otherwise. Oil ring is mostly responsible for oil control, but with a sloppy big end the piston can wobble about, causing the smoke.

Looks very familiar Andy! I have been quoted 20 quid plus vat for the homing of my block. And 50 for the crank regrind....so not too bad.

Just deciding what to do, whether to pay for the rebore or look for an alternative engine - as the pound notes are a bit scarce at the moment and I don't want to pay money for an engine that i might well be replacing in the future with a diesel.

Undoubtedly, there is wear in the bore - but the question is whether or not to do anything about it at this point. I have a replacement crank ready to go in, some spare pistons I can steal a top ring off (assuming they're standard pistons), another conrod to replace the one with the duff big end - so in theory, I could rebuild the engine with 2nd hand bits and the crank and get away with just buying some new gaskets.....

What shall I do?

go for it nothing ventured nothing gained if it don't work then maybe have to do it all again by which time you may have saved some pennies to throw at it,.....
or just wait & save time to do it properly, theres an engine on ebay 25 quid could be a better option ?

Well, after a long day's struggle for Baz and I, Babs now has a new heart beating inside of her.

Putting the replacement engine in took a bit longer than expected. First we had to replace the manifolds, side plate (the breather tube was bent and broken) and then we started the engine on the trolley, just to make sure it ran. Got it going in the end, and so it was time to put it in the van.

Once the engine was installed, we managed to get the heavy old girl on the ramp and put the gearbox back on and eventually had her running at around 8pm tonight. Sounds a lot better than the previous engine, and just have to sort out a reluctant idle.

That's all for now.

adjust the screw on the carb ?throttle cable sticking :I
I am confident by the time you read this you will have discovered the problem anyway & fixed it :D wheres the engine from?

Could just need setting up, or lazy fuel pump, or air leak, or sticky throttle linkage etc :)

Well done chaps, a marathom session - and it runs[8D]
Bad idle could just be a bit of crap in the carb disturbed by all the jiggling about.
Did the bit of wire method help in identifying the cc's by the way.

I am afraid Babs won't be going to Bangor. I can only drive one vehicle, and will be taking the chamois as it will be parked in the for sale section. I couldn't persuade Ruth to come over for this one!

I'll get back to her once I get back, in between welding up a sunbeam alpine for someone. I think the 1724 cast into the side of the block gives away the capacity of the engine that we installed in babs. Not sure about the engine in the minx, but as the head is going to have to come off, I'll wait until then.

As far as the engine I put in the camper, we had to put the manifolds from the other engine on, which were running fine on that. I did have a spurt of fuel come out the top of the carb when it was turning over, which was similar to the other engine before I rebuilt the head. So, will be collecting a new head gasket set tomorrow, and will be putting the good head on it if a bit of fiddling with the timing and mixture doesnt resolve the idling issue.

At least the bottom end doesn't sound too rumbly.
