it was to be delivered to work, I have ordered all my engine spares from them - never had a problem, their despatch email just said picked up by TNT weds for thurs delivery - however have just got the answer phone today, when I ordered sunday he phoned me to say he was down at the olympics until weds lunchtime so maybe traffic was bad and TNT got delayed today

at least I got on with a few other things, have fitted the manual overide for the Kenlowe fan and a temporary lash up for a cigarette lighter so we can run the sat nav.

be it friday or saturday please dont expect to see the dog in a finished condition, we are still very much work in progress but we are desperate to get there to give it a decent run after all the mechanical work

some partial success......

carried some more investigation,

running the engine at fast idle it transpired that the radiator cap was lifting just before the temperature needle reached the red - ditching coolant down the overflow tube - in turned dropping the pressure / level in the cooling system causing it to boil.

I replaced the rad cap with a new 15 PSI rated one and ran at fast idle (with a lot of thrashing) to get the temperature into the red without the cap lifting - Hooray I thought

I then went for a drive, things seemed perfect, temp sat just over half way

then I got to the dreaded bypass, the moment I got over 40 mph the temp gauge shot into the red and the new 15psi cap lifted, luckily I had brought more water with me (it only needed 2 litres to top up)

I did however notice a small leak on the heating matrix. It could be that there is a sufficient leak here to drop the water level and system pressure to a sufficient level that the water pump becomes ineffective and the coolant boils.

So I have bypassed the heating matrix - but ran out of time to test it.

Failing that I have been reading up, as the large temp rise only occurs when the van is flat out I am wondering if I am getting exhaust gas leaking into the cooling system. Next step is to test that / get the head back off to inspect it.

Its mad that it runs fine at 35 but goes potty at 40

.. I also bought one of those laser heat guns to check for hot spots - nothing of note, with the engine at idle warmed so the temp is at halfway the block sits at approx 75-80c the exhaust manifold at 85-90, the injectors approx 70c, thermostat housing 80c - couldnt find any local hotspots

Lee, forgive me if I've missed it in the previous 80-odd pages but is the radiator itself in good clean condition?

I am not a person, I am a number, 395 actually......Be seeing you!
If I told you I was a pathological liar, would you believe me?

Could the engine be a bit tight after the new pistons were fitted?
