If I told you I was a pathological liar, would you believe me?

put everything back together today - seats in and ready for a drive.

started up - and then noticed a trickle of water......

a core plug had started leaking - right under the fuel pump so a pig to get to.

so I chucked a bottle of radweld in. It fixed the leak but I think it has bunged up my rad.

went for the first proper on the road drive since getting the dog home and within 3 miles the temp was in the red. The Kenlowe was running but it was struggling. I found that at idle the temp dropped, but when i got up to any decent speed (35 mph) the temp just shot up.

luckily the 3 horsehoes also happens to be 3 miles away so I stopped for a quick refreshment then drove back after letting everything cool down for a bit. Can i flush the radweld out of the rad if I take it off?

heres the frustrating bit. Just sat in the Dog with the engine running - even running over half an hour with some revving I cant get it into the red. Can a worn water pump function less efficiently at higher revs?

running with the rad cap off there is definitely a water flow.

you say it hit the red within 3 miles[:0] thats way to quick evan without ANY water in it. it may be a good idea to check that your temp guage is still working properly. and that the sensor is working to. when you say its in the red. was the engine to hot to touch[?] as if its reading wrong you would be able to touch it.

ah k, forget that idea then:( was the stat new[?] could be that the rad weld has locked it half shut;) could evan just be because it wants the water bleeding up if its been leaking. perkins are a great lump but a little air in the water can make a massive differance:)

I did remove and re-route the heater hoses earlier, and remade the thermostat gasket - and drained the cooling system to fill with demin and antifreeze - maybe theres some trapped air

sounds like a distinct possability m8. i wouldnt think the rad weld would do that much harm as you would need a fair amount to block a diesel rad up

any ideas for the best way to bleed it - or just let it sort itself out on idle?

not sure where there bleed screw is (if they have one). but i was always told if the bleed screw is siezed its best to warm it up a bit, then squeeze the botton hose 20 times followed by the top 20 times (with rad cap off) then wait for the fan to kick in (so the stat is open) and squeeze them again 10 times each (with heater on hot). always worked for me.

Have you got a shroud on the fan? It seems to be very essevtial as i found out the hard way :( Have a look a couple of pages back in my ICEMAN thread. Long storey short, same issue with overheat when driven with kenlow. Ended up reverting back to standard and all good.

Well...alright then, maybe just a little...

I thought the shroud was only important for the mechanical fan? - going up a few posts, yes its a brand new thermostat - will whip it out and have a look

The shroud is there to direct air onto the engine otherwise it just blows all round the engine bay with no real cooling effect. I ran my CA once without its radiator shroud and it overheated once it was replaced it ran cool again. Surely your kenlowe is mounted in front of the radiator? You do need to refit the shroud.

Bloody Commer`s!

the kenlowe is fitted behind the rad - apparantly its more efficient for it to suck than blow

Mmm that may be true but not if it means you cant have the shroud fitted, when I bought my Kenlowe, 20 years ago! the instructions said to mount it in front of the rad but of course the thinking may well be different now....except that you really need the shroud fitted to direct air onto the engine.
