Theres life in the old dog yet

havent changed the diesel filter yet, waiting for the kit to turn up to change from a paper element to a proper filter - they are on back order from the spares site.

hi,all.heavy whight smoke on start up is normaly unburnt atomised fuel (ie freshly squirted from your injectors if the nozzles where worn before they where serviced they would off been dripping large dropplets of diesel which would off run out of exhust rather than the heavy mist you now get),if you have had to wind it over for any length off time your exhust will be full of atomized fuel which is why it takes a while to clear, the exhust tail pipe will be oily and proberly smell off diesel change fuel fillter and clean sedimentor bowl(normaly a glass bowl near tank) if it has one then take dog for a long run and drive it hard keeping an eye on exhust, there is a fair chance piston rings will be gummed up from standing and repeated cold starting but this should sort it,s self out with some proper use, these old perkins engines always take a bit offstarting (i am a agricultral/plant enginner and have worked on many perkins engines over the years)it is a industrial engine and is designed to be worked hard eg a genarator where it would have to run flat out under load for days hope this is off help and you can unerstand my dreadfull english

im thinking that might be it, the sediment bowl was cleaned, would redex assist with the gummed rings or is it purely a matter of giving it a right good thrashing

realised that I hadnt annealed the copper washers on the injectors - so I took them out to do them.... went to put them back and cracked another injector clamp (honest not swinging off them) - good job I have a spare,,,, or so I thought, good old charlotte has had a tidy up and the spare is missing in action, so had to gingerly put injector 3 in with a dodgy clamp.

gave the engine a run - still smoky - obviously oil now that all injectors are nicely sealed - ran for 2 1/2 hours on slightly fast idle - to prove the cooling system and Kenlow fan (works a treat).

now dont laugh at me, but I took a punt with a snake oil & shinola merchant.

I bought an oil additive which is supposed to coat all the worn componentes with "Cermet" a ceramic / metal mixture - probably a load of old baldocks but its my last chance saloon before changing the piston rings

it comes in three shots that need adding every 200km or 4 hrs idle running

we shall see, but nothing to report so far although it is quieter

Hmm, good luck Lee but it reminds me of a product called ''piston seal'' that i used on an old Allegro once...it was like rubber pellets that one removed a spark plug and fed in to the cylinder that alledgedly tightened everything up...[V]...it didn't work:(

Fingers crossed for you though;)

I also have some gunk to put in the cylinders to soak all the carbon and gum off the rings "anticarbon"- as we say in the navy it will either fix it or f*@k it..... I see a piston ring change on the horizon

I did the anticarbon treatment - I looked down the injector holes 20mins after letting it soak - load of black sludge - cranked the engine to blow the cylinders out and looked again - much, much cleaner inside - definite shiny bits now visible. Gave the engine a 30 minute run with the idle speed cranked up, very smoky at the start as the crap got burned up and spat out - seems to have made a fair bit of difference - although in the process the heater hose chose to split so I will have to change that, but things are definitely improving. there is still a bit of smoke when at top revs but it has gone at low and mid revs.

Well Lee I think you should now put it all back togather, Pack up your kit bag, take her for a long weekend run and come and meet up with us at Moffat :p it would be great to see you and Charlotte again.I know you will enjoy the trip and be most welcome. [^]

but it goes without saying dont forget your AA card even though you won't need it :)

I MANAGED TO WHEEL SPIN THE DOG !!!!!!!!!!!!

fixed the heater hose. Put the engine covers on (sort of) and took the dog for a blat up and down the track where the cottage is. Managed a wheel spin in 1st (ok i was parked on wood chippings) only got into third as the track is too bumpy for any more (especially when you havent put the seats back in yet)

first couple of runs managed a fair bit of engine smoke (was really gunning it) all the tools and bits in the back I had forgotten to put away went crashing everywhere

after about 6 runs of annoying the neighbours the exhaust was clear - on full throttle theres a small puff of smoke every 5 or 10 seconds but lets remember its a 35yr old diesel at full revs.

so i now have to work out what I have done.

was it the overhauled injectors with new nozzles
was it the snakeoil "wonder treatment" in the oil
was it the anticarbon that a soaked the cylinders / piston rings in
was it the change up to 20W50 oil
was it the change of filters

i think each had their part to play but undoubtedly the biggest improvement was after the anticarbon soak of the cylinders

should be able to manage a run out on the road at the weekend - once the seats are in!
