Theres life in the old dog yet

big boys bumper box of spares turned up today - lovely shiny new pistons & liners
only downside is the liners would require honing to size - so not for this time round.

measured up the new pistons against the old, I have an extra 0.015 - 0.025" to play with. If you remember my feeler readings of the old pistons in situ came out at about 0.018" gap (but I think you have to add abit due to the feeler width)

So the decision is made, the new pistons and rings will be going in the existing bores as the clearance should then be back within limits

Heads all finished, all valves lapped in, piston strip & rebuild tomorrow, will give the bores a gentle deglaze as I dont want to remove more than i have to

Best to invest in a honing tool, only around £15. Fits in the end of a cordless drill:)

Okay y'all (hillbilly accent) so what is your approach pacifically, stone hone or flex-hone[?]:)

knowing no better I am going for a flexi hone dipped into some suitable form of lubricant - im not going mad with it either

Be sure you dont give that thurrrr hone to many revalations now:)
I used some smooth emery to bust the glaze on Harveys engine, didn't get the popular cross hatching but managed to wear the skin off me thumb knuckle[xx(]

How refreshing

an engine overhaul kit from spares4engines is just over £400 which includes new pistons, new gudgeon pins & circlips, all piston rings, cylinder liners, big end bearings, small end bearings, main bearings, every gasket required for a full strip & rebuild including rope seals for the crankshaft, the valve train kit cost £60 something - and includes all the banjo washers and new rubbers for the fuel pump lines as well.(you get some duplication in the kits so I got a price for the overhaul kit minus the bits I had already purchased)

so for all parts say around £500. Bear in mind I am only going to change gaskets that I have broken into so I have spares left for future work.

I also had to fork out for injector overhauls which was over £100, a couple of new injector clamps, new oil filter assembly (so you can use modern oil filters) and new fuel filter assembly (so I can use modern fuel filters)

A K&N air filter as there was no air filter fitted (possibly why the pistons were worn)

The re-core of the radiator is £115 - and I also forked out for a kenlowe fan to gain some power back from the mechanical fan.

oh and then there was the new battery as the one in there was only 20Ah

and a partridge in a pear tree!
