We parked next to the most amazing VW split screen in a field of VW fans and guess who got all the admirers?

I love Commers!

oh and to top it off, stopped in for a MOT on the way home.

Pass with no advisories- never had that before!

only 3000 miles since the last MOT - will try harder this year - promise!

a Commer oasis in a desert of dubs, now that is what you call cool [8D][8D][^]

Nice woodwork by the way [^]

Haven't used snail much over the past few months, I started to try and tart the alpine up for it's MOT and one thing led to another...

Outer panels just held in place with self tappers (good idea panky) and mole grips at the mo. Planning on having a weld-a-thon between christmas and New year provided its not raining.

All this has caused me to spend some time on the sunbeam alpine forum where I saw an interesting comment about swapping 1725 engines around. The author was positive that if you put a later engine (the hunter ones tilt slightly over) in an earlier (vertical) car then you have to swap the dip sticks over as they are different?

Now since I've had the snail I've had random hot oil episodes - typicallly after an oil change for a 100miles or so. This had me thinking that perhaps with the wrong dip stick / sump combo I was over filling her and hence the hot oil.

Rumaging aroun the garage I have found three different dipsticks - but they are all the same length - has anyone else heard of different dipstick lengths between 1725 variants or is this just misinformantion (which i am now perpetuating)?

The alpine has the same length dipstick (but a hunter sump) and i've never had a problem with that. That said I have been filling the snail to 3/4 full and haven't had any problems since. curious.

Hopefully get her our for a drive later in the week[8D]

There is a comparison on here somewhere - I think it was Kes who put some pics of various types of dipsticks on. I suppose if you filled the sump with the recommended amount of oil and see which dipstick is nearest the mark.

Yes, Panky, we can hardly contain our curiosity. What is going on in the back of that garage of yours?

Coming along nicely, the design has evolved but maintains the spirit of the original - a bit like Harvey:)
Should be finished by New Year:I

Many thanks, I think she is rather nice too. Part of the family.

Radio on, pull out onto the A303, wind her up to a steady (heady) 55mph - instant stress relief. Just need some sunshine!
