The New Project

Well the van is now safely parked in the drive at home in Sydney after a 1100km round trip to pick it up. The van was in a wrecker’s yard in Wodonga on the NSW/Victoria boarder. The owner told me that it originally came from Inverell in the Northern Tablelands area of NSW, some 600km north of Sydney, and he didn't know much else.

The van has no radiator, motor, gearbox or tail shaft. The diff is there with the brake drums, but appears to be missing the brake shoes and cylinders etc on both sides. The front end is complete, though the passenger side drum was seized (now free).

The body has some bumps and scraps, and a few areas of rust, which shouldn't be too much trouble. We in Australia have a very different concept of rust to what you have in the UK, the legacy of a warmer climate and no snowy/salty roads. I have noticed on all the pictures I have seen of Australian Commers in paddocks, they all seem to have lichen growing on them, mine being no exception. This was quickly removed and a general wash and scrub to get rid of the oxidised paintwork has revealed faint traces of old sign writing. So far I can just make out Express Delivery across the rear doors ( if you look hard enough you can just see it in the picture and Friendly Express on the drivers side. I might have a go at cutting and buffing the paint down and see if I can rescue it.

Mechanically I was planning to fit a modern 4 cylinder (running on LPG), 5 speed, replace the diff and upgrade the brakes to 4 wheel disc. It seems to me that the motor could be a problem as most modern OHC motors, would be considerably taller than the original. So I searched through the forum on this matter and couldn’t see any easy option. Then in a flash of brilliance, it came to me! Why not fit a rotary, this should easily solve the hight/space issue. In standard form a 13B has around 130BHP with enormous scope for more if desired. Again straight LPG would be the sensible economic option as I do want a “working” van that can double on weekends as my service and tow vehicle for my Mk1 2.5PI Triumph club car.

Has anyone heard of this conversion before? I remember seeing a Mitsubishi Express L300 fitted with a rotary turbo popping and hissing as it took of at the lights a year or so back. I think it’s worth looking at or do you think that rather than look for a rotary motor I should look for a therapist!

Cheers Stephen

Rotary sounds good! What gearbox set-up would you go for?

Peggy's been camping!

If I told you I was a pathological liar, would you believe me?

Some people would scream no at talk of a ****el, but I say go for it.

I love all 4 wheeled vehicles, irrespective of age, (apart from Mondeos and Focus').

It's all right Nick, ****EL is NOT a rude word!

Speaking to mate back home and there apparently is a Commer in the latest Just Cars magazine for sale for $250 in NSW. Might be worth a look for spares.

Jump on it, it may even be good enough as a future project once this one's completed.

Well not a lot done since last visit. Have now given the van a good scrub and once over. Been having a look at the front suspension and brakes as disc's are the way I'll be going. Already have a test rotor and caliper and looks like it should all work. Here is a picture of the set-up in position. I will need to knock up some caliper mounting brackets and do some machining on the stub axles over the coming weeks and it should all be sweet!

The disc & caliper are off one of our local favourites, a VL Holden Commodore, so they are easy to get. At 290mm and ventilated, combined with 279mm solid rear discs that are on the VN Commodore diff that will be replacing the original, it should have some serious stopping power. Remember I want to ultimately use this as a tow vehicle, so I don't think this an overkill

I'll post some more pictures as it comes together, cheers till then.

Hi Stephen,

The van is looking good! I like the idea of using dunny-door discs, the Humber Super Snipe uprights are a straight swap, but the discs are hard to get a hold of here in Oz. Looking forward to seeing the caliper mount. Any more thoughts regarding engines?

Mike

Was thinking if Holden discs could be used on the Commers last night myself actually...I was thinking from an earlier Kingswood though...

There's thinking and doing though!!..it'll be nice to see the complete set up!..:D

Hi all,

As always everyday life gets in the way of the important things, like getting the Van back on the road. Fortunately I have manage to get a few weeks holidays prior to Christmas. As you would have read up to this point I've been looking at complete replacement of the rear axle/diff assembly and upgrading the front brakes. After considering a number of options, I chanced upon an add on EBay (Aust). The Seller had 2 Nissan Navara D21 diffs for sale starting at $20AU (Approx 10 Pounds) with 2 days to go and no bids. I asked the seller the width of the assembly which was approximately 1460mm. This was within the range necessary, so i thought why not go for it.

Why not 6 studs, I thought, there are plenty of 15” wheels around with a range of offsets. There had to be a combination that will fit. As for the front disc brakes that I want, there are lots of manufactures that use this 6 stud pattern hub with ventilated discs, so it shouldn’t be that hard to find something that I could adapt.

All went well and I was the only bidder, and after picking the diffs up I discovered that I had one 4.875:1 and one 4.375:1, with 10" drums, and both fitted with Limited Slip Diffs!! Using the 4.375:1 diff with 225/60x15” tyres this should equate to 113kph/70mph @ 3250rpm with the overdrive gearbox I am hoping to use, but I won’t go into that now.

I set to with the grinder and removed the mounting plates from the under side and relocated them to the top of the diff and tack welded them in place and set the diff in position in the van. With the wheel mounting face located almost in the centre of the wheel arch, it became obvious that zero offset wheels would be necessary. Back at the wreckers I came across a set of 4 old Land Cruiser 15x7” mags, which had the required zero offset. I though they would look pretty cool on the van, and bought them on the spot.

Well finally today I managed to assemble all the bits, and it all fits! The diff is a little wide with the zero offset 7” mags fitted, and will need a little grinding to give better clearance between the bodywork and the wheel. Wheels with about 15-20mm negative offset would centralised the wheel perfectly. You can see in the pictures it’s pretty tight on the outside, but fine in the inside face.

Now it’s all in place, I can measure and get the correct length U bolts and clamping plates and fabricating some new shock absorber mounts to suit telescopic shocks. The final touch will be the installation of a load proportioning valve, as used in most modern 1 ton pick ups.

I had been looking for some old tyres to check for final fit. I was originally planning to use 225/60x15’s but suspect they might be a little too wide. I will try and pick up a bald 205 or 215/60 for checking the clearance to the guards. The 205/60x15" will only increase the engine speed to 3400rpm for the same 113kph/70mph outcome.

23112010006.jpg 23112010007.jpg

Prior to final installation, I’ll be stripping it all out, cleaning and painting it all. I can then start planning the front vented Disc brake assemblies. I am very happy with the outcome so far. The front may prove a little more difficult, but will update you all as I get closer to a satisfactory outcome.

Hopefully that update won't be too far away.

Cheers
Stephen

Looks like you have more than one Triumph, judging by the second photo. Is that a PI as well?

Glad to see someone else with good taste! :D. Are you on the T2000 forum as well?

What a excellent result [8D] sounds like its coming together really well :p
