Su manifold is no problem :)

In the search for economy the first place to start is the exhaust system, it has the most effect on economy.

Speaking on behalf of OLDCAMPER hear (he's currently lying on the sofa dictating to me!):p

Hi Tim,

Having excessively ready Davids Book Tuning book on tuning morris's I know you're right regarding the exhaust. However when we got smurf it had an incredibly noisy RC40 exhaust or similar, which gave us all headaches! and still only got 19mpg. So I don't want to change the exhaust until I've got it carb'd properly. The webber still seems to rich, and I never get a nice blue on the colour tune. The webber seems a pig to get set up right.

I would be interested in a manifold, could you sell me one you've converted? I'd rather not have the car of the road for too long.

Also regarding the SU, there's no point changing one wrong carb for another, does anyone know what spring/ needle is required on an SU to get it running with a good performance to economy balance ? It's very easy to make a car go like hell without any consideration to economy!:D

Cheers,

Will/ Martin

The exhaust is easy to sort, I never fitted an extra silencer box and they are very cheap to buy and add ne into the system:D...I think Andy Thowman wrote a thread in detail about jet/needle sizes to give the best performance/returns...I'll try and find it later..

Smurf never had a PROPER RC40, which explains the noise. Proper ones are not that noisy.
You need to sort the exhaust before doing the carb.
I do have a spare inlet here that i can modify for you if you want:)
If you fit a HIF6 or 44 a good starting point would be a STD 1275 Mini BFY needle.

getting the pop top shouldn't be too difficult, it's the surrounding areas of metal that are proving elusive... :(

True Tim, Smurf hasn't got a PROPER RC40 but even a PROPER one is a tad noisy without an intermediate box..:)

No problem, enjoy your snakeskin free Commering :)

Colin, Quite agree the RC40 is very noisy as a single box. It is designed as a twin box system and should be used as such to get decent silencing :)

Watch out Smurfs out and about passed MOT at Sopley garage very helpfull and frindl they had to readjust the front brakes.
sai best way was to wind adjuster hard on to really jam drum and then adjust back.
They work really well now.
Just need to fit a snow plough and heater for Easter camping!

Just popping back for a breif update, I'm sure dad will be along shorty for a proper one.

Smurf has lost his hat! and is undergoing a frontal lobotomy, I'll post some pictures soon ;):D

Fear not, he's going to fit a pop top [8D]:D

lets first roll back to this picture, to give us an idea of what my dads doing:

Insanesmurfplan.jpg

he's now got a pop top to go in( all the way from Yorkshire!)

It's quite hard to photograph the work as the roof of the shed is very low, here are a few rather confusing photos of the work to date:
