BOOO!

Yes thats right, I'm back! And that can only mean one thing, its that time of year when you turn your attention to getting the camper fixed up for the coming season. [8D]

At the end of last year Smurf wasn't in the best of shape, she successfully took my Mum and Dad to Wales and back, but not without a few problems, the dreaded snakeskin reared its ugly head and proceeded to block the fuel pump, lines and the carb, meaning about 10 breakdowns were endured[V][xx(][:(!]. Dads taken the plunge and ordered up an new Ali tank, this along with some new fuel lines and a SU fuel pump should ensure reliability over the coming year. I'm still triyng to get him to fit a SU carb but it's proving difficult to convince him....

In the two years since we've had Smurf one thing has always bugged my Dad and I, the peak. It's been steadily rusting away under the high top for the best part of two years, its now getting to the stage where something needs doing or there will be a LOT of work in the future [xx(] So this winter Dads considering whipping the top off and fixing it, the metal work shouldn't be too hard although the chances of getting the High top back on are pretty slim; It'll probably deform during storage and be a real pig to get back on.

So He wants to fit a conventional roof and pop top, but here's the problem, where does one obtain one of these ? It's all pretty tentative at the moment and nothing set in stone, but I'd be interested to hear if anyone has any ideas on what to do...

On another note, here's the convertible I was welding up last year:

I'm now working on this, a 1950 Morris Minor Lowlight:

It's the rustiest thing I've ever seen [xx(][V]:(

All the best, Happy Commering :D[8D]

Well hello there young fellamelad welcome back - did you know that your dad has been sneaking about on here;)
Looks like you've done a nice job on the Minor, it's looking grand[8D]
Peak repairs are almost common place now and both Martin and Woolfy make the repair panels, once you've got the screen out it doesn't look as daunting as you might think - a sort of up side down valence repair:)
From what I can remember of Smurf's interior there isn't much left of the roof panel to attach a pop top to so some new metal may need to be let in around the edges to close up the hole a bit. I would suggest an Autosleeper roof as the construction is just about as simple as it gets with no struts or braces to worry about.
Good luck with the rotten Minor resto(we don't mind that kind of splittie:)

Well done on getting the Minor done :p

Tell dad he is very silly to NOT fit an SU ;)

Hi Will.......There is an autosleeper with a good condition pop top near me...the van is soon to be scrapped but there may be enough savable surrounding roof that you could weld in to save a lot of fabricating? ...;)

The van is also a Dodge and if you have a trailer, I reckon you could take the whole van for very little........from what I can remember Smurf was a bit delicate at the top of the frame just behind the passenger door, you could possibly cut and fit a section here too :)....can't remember what the peak was like as to whether that would be transferable....

Old camper here, its my van NOW! Cheeky Monkey he's not let that on.
How else can he afford all the Moggies!
Colin where is the Commer for scrap pop top? I might just be wot we want!
And Tim I love SU's as the Morris use them but it you dont have the correct needle they drink petrol....found that ou the hard way in the past.
What sort of MPG do they do? Can you do me an inlet manifold, dont want to change the exhaust as I not racing it but 19mpg seems abit expensive.>
?
The Webber on iy seems always too rich

Been following Dobby et al in the mag, was wondering about Smurf. Without the white hat he won't relly be Smurf though will he?
