THE ICEMAN restoration

The rear anti roll bar is a good idea [^] certainly needed on a commer [:0]
Robbing the air-con off another vehicle is probably the best solution ;)

Hi Admin. Iceman has had his nose blocked as he kept dribbling on the cab floor! The heater box was totally beyond repair as no one had squeezed his bulbous end for ages.
Think i will see if i can wangle something off a late nintees van for air con if i get inspired.

Well its done. The gearbox has at last been dispatched to get the overdrive fitted. Apparantly he can somehow organise it that the original length prop will fit but im a bit skeptical on this. We shall see. The good news is that it will be done and back before christmas so i can spend many glorious hours under the commer.......what are you doing christmas eve?

Hi everybody, Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and hope the new year brings you all much joy and happiness. Now down to business!
Santa arrived in his diesel powered sleigh but was unable to fit down the chimney[:0]
He did however leave this on the deck:D:D:D

Hi all, Its been ages since there was an update on the ICE MAN. I check in everyday to see how peeps are getting on and it is great to see how the forum has grown and all the new vans. I am surprised at the number of vans comming to light.:)
Unfortunately due to some bad things happening last christmas very little has been done since then on the poor iceman. He languashes in his garage waiting for further loveing.:( The good news is that the bad stuff is out of the way and life is getting back to normal at last and with any luck i will get to spend some time on the commer soon.:)[8D]

Hi all just spent a happy couple of days rolling around under the iceman (er... you know what i mean) pulled out the petrol tank and gave it a shotblast to clean off all the crud. Some primer and epoxy paint and good as new. No sign of the dreaded snakeskin in there so with any luck wont need to touch it again for a loooong time.
In other news this week the radiator was treated to a new set of hoses. Commer ones are not easly found so these ore from a Ford Telstar[:0] A little 'adjustment' and they go on a treat. Also got the choke cable sorted with a new bracket for the carb end, oh and re fitted the rear axle too...

Now with a bundle of joy - and a commer!

So went down to the garage this morning and got stuck in with a vengence. Got both the driver side brakes fully sorted just need the flexies to finish off. Re mounted the rubber spring assisters at the same time as they were nearby. While i was underneath i fitted the speedo cable. Was a bit uncertain if it would reach as he now has an overdrive fitted but with careful routing of the cable it will just reach. After all that was done i finished the rest of the undersealing to keep any rust devils at bay. The re finished petrol tank went on no worries although the filler pipe is perished so need to pick up a new one during the week. While i was in the mood i refitted the clutch pipe as well. Whew... will see if i can get some more done for next weekend.

Another weekend in the garage inching the iceman ever closer to being back on the road. Started off by sorting the exhaust manifold. Some time ago i had seperated the manifolds and the inlet was converted from top draught to side draught SU. I ground off approx 8mm of iron around the opening in the top of the manifold. This is needed to create an air gap between them to prevent overheating of the inlet which leads to feul heating problems and reduces efficiency. Once that was done i had to block off the rather large hole. There is a stainless deflector plate that needs to be retained. This caused a problem as there is now three different metals to be welded together at once. Cast iron, stainless steel and the mild steel cover plate. I had no problem doing the inlet as there was no stainless to be welded. The welding rod i settled on was an RSP stainless rod. I found this welded all three metals well and provided i kept the heat down with short welds micro fractures were mostly avoided.
With the manifold sorted i went to re fit the exhaust. Turns out that because there is now an overdrive the exhaust would not fit. I decided to change it around and have it exit the passanger side instead. This turned out to be easier said than done though. After a rediculous amount of fettling (cutting and welding) i got it to fit ok.

Well done :) you took a bit of a gamble with those rods, are they 18/8 or 25/20 [?] do check it for leaks and keep a close eye on it, also check for flatness as the middle tends to rise with distortion ;)
