The beast is home

Nice looking van and full marks for getting stuck in so soon ;).

With energy like that you'll be on the road in no time.

It's a Car-Camper, later version without the louvre side windows and it has the MKII Sherwood rsing roof. The fridge was an optional extra which reduced the size of the chest of drawers. Saw this one at rallies a few years ago in the hands of previous owner, it was very nice back then, and lower 'ribs' had not been filled.

I started with nothing.....and I still have most of it!

Can anyone explain a little more about my van? Im interested in what 'carcamper' said about the 'ribs'? What do you mean? (and the flutes?!)
I really want to be able to explain to people when they ask about it, and i can also distinguish (sp?) between the old/original stuff and the new/changed stuff.

its ok, she has got some, she,s just not wearing them yet :I

"you were only supposed to blow the bloody SLIDING doors off"

Clova has some stuff (what it is exactly i dont know) in her top grill/vent. I wonderd what it is and if i need to un-block it? Is it vital?
And her bumper/bull bar thing across the bottom and back have been sprayed black in her past. We really want them shiney chrome again but not sure the best way around it?

Shes getting her welding done tomorrow *bites nails*

[V]:([V]

I'm unsure about the future of Clova [V]
Ive just heard from Nick that most of the back end needs welding including parts of the chassis, its too tall to go on the ramp so they have to do it on the floor and its gonna cost about £300

£300 welding - Which is only half the jobs to get it through its MOT
£100 TAX
£400-500 insurance

and we put £10 of petrol(and £3 lead additive) in it and it conked out 7 miles away having run out of petrol. It would be hard for us to fill it with petrol if it drinks that much :(

Im not sure what to do now... [V]

oh don't give up :)
fuel wise is the tank leaking?carb leaking?was there a strong smell of fuel?the fuel may come back out of the cap, something to do with vacume? There is a breather hose I think sometimes gets blocked or pinched up causing the fuel to come back out of cap,is there staining around the cap on body?
mpg should be 20-25 depending type of run,all can be improved with a few mods.
I never have much money either [V]so long as the van passes it's mot & runs I am happy, any other progress is a bonus.
Hang in there :)

That seems a bit high for insurance.. Think most on here get it alot cheaper than that!!!
Ours is with Pete Best and is £114 a year.
If thats any help in bringing your costs down a bit :)

Cazz... student commerade!!!!

hhmmm..
I REALLY want to but Nick's unsure. we can afford to do it all (eventually) by saving up and paying all in one lump sum. But if we spend that much on welding and all that stuff and can't afford to GO anywhere.

Im sure that there is something wrong with the engine (petrol drinking wise) because when we first went to see it, there was a petrol leak which seems to appear and dissappear randomly and 7miles on £10 isnt right! If it was, you lot must be millionaires to afford going away!!
I will get Nick to look it over. Anything else it might be you think?

7 miles is defo not right. I get much more than that so don't worry too much over the Petrol situation - As Chris says, with a few mods you will be reet. It's hugely unfortunate that you are penalised with insurance due to your age but that's greedy insurance companies for you. I remember being your age and paying £1200 per year for an Astra. We have all been there Kelsey, but it does get better eventually;-) Not sure if anybody here would be able to offer you a better deal for the welding but it maybe worth a try? Don't give up guys. None of us are minted enough to pay whatever the price may be when things go wrong, and like yourselves these costs of running vans have to be factord in to the daily costs of life. Just try and hang in there and utilise and explor all your contacts and enquire wherever you can. It will be worth it when you both are trundling down the road in it at 60mph max with a bag of chips and a crate of Stronbow waiting for you in the " Not very cold " fridge when you park up. HAHAHAHAHA. We are all " ROOTING " for you;-)

DUKE!

Hmmm 4 mpg definitely doesn't sound right!! :D I'd do Commerchris's checks and replace all the rubber fuel hoses to make sure the system isn't loosing the liquid gold! I always give my classic purchases a good full service, cleaning electrical connections, replacing oils/greases, HT leads, air filter, points etc and make sure everything works as it should. Saves loads of time and money in the long run.

Have you tried limited mileage policies? I've found Footman James pretty good and sometimes give a good discount if you're with a club + they throw in breakdown cover which is worth £40.

If you decide to sell anyhow, I'm currently Commerless! ;)
