Tacho

OK chaps - help please.
I've got a Jaeger Electronique tacho that I'd like to put in Ted along with a few other gauges, but I'm at bit of a loss how to wire it in. I've done the usual searches but cant find one similar to refer to.

Cant see any markings on the bach of the gauge.

If you find out would love to know also - very handy to know what I'm doing to the engine, can't hear how hard it's working with the fan, exhaust and wind noise! :)

The factorial of three is only six... So surely it's a case of "have a go"... You can tell I'm a corporate egg rather than a mechanic can't you...

For to be a better Friday than mine - chipping old linseed putty off an old 1930's door...

I'll have a look at the wiring diagram for my 17 as it has a Jaeger Tacho. I'll get back to you later, when I'm home.

Red to red
Brown to brown
Blew to bits

I sorted my garage into 4 piles of stuff.
1. Stuff I`m keeping
2. Stuff I`m not getting rid of.
3. Stuff I might use..one day.
4. Stuff that might come in handy.

I can't believe you are at a loss, the man who has an answer for everyone;)everyone

I know it amazing isn't it, must be old age - and the fact I don't want to do a PaulJL[B)]
Thanks Chris, looks losks I've got a European Jaeger and not a Smiths Jaeger as the wire colours are different to all the ather tachos I've seen:I

Nice looking Tacho. First question that needs answering is, what did it come out of, a 4, 6 or 8 cylinder car. Tachometers in cars built on the production line are specific, not like aftermarket versions, which have a switch to select 4, 6 or 8 cylinders. If it's off a 4 cylinder you'll be ok, if off a 6 cylinder it will read 4/6th of the actual RPM and if 8, read only 4/8ths of the revs.

I once fitted, what I thought was a dedicated 4cyl tacho, but discovered later, was for a 6 to the 4 cylinder motor in my rally car. During the next rally I couldn't understand why the motor wouldn't rev much past 5000 rpm, turned out that was actually 7500 rpm. Thought at the time I was going pretty hard and motor was on song, just the wrong tacho for the motor.

I'll assume it is off a 4 cylinder. Here's a picture of my VDO tacho, similar with 3 electrical connections.

Your 3 wires present should be no different, being Power +, Earth - and finally the signal wire "G". The signal wire G goes straight from the tacho to the terminal on your ignition coil that connects to the points in the distributor. This senses the pulse each time the coil fires a spark plug and the gauge converts that into RPM

For the +, take power from something that is only live when the ignition is switched on, the back of the ignition switch would be the closest thing.

The earth can go to an existing earth wire under the dash, there are a few under there earthing the bodies of the speedo and temp gauge.

The instrument globe, not shown, will most likely have only one wire to power it as it will pick it's earth from the tacho body that is earthed elsewhere. Connect the power to the globe from one of the globe/s on the speedo or temp gauge so it turns on and off with your park/headlights.

Check the 3 terminals on the back of your tacho, I suspect 2 will be insulated where they pass through the gauge body. The 3rd hopefully just welded to the body will be your earth, hard to tell from the picture but think it might be the brown one. That leaves only 2 wires to figure out. My best guess is that the violet wire is the power and the green with red trace is the one to the coil.

The above does not apply to Smiths Tachos, that's another story

Cheers Stephen

I'm afraid I can't be much help at the moment. The wiring diagram I have only shows the connections to the terminal block to the instrument cluster and none of the wires correspond with those on your tacho. I have to visit the workshop this weekend, so will take a photo of the back of a spare dashboard and see if that can help.

Excellent[^] I got it off ebay ages ago but seem to remember the description saying it was for a four pot.
On closer inspection the brown wire is definitely in contact with the case.

While the green and lilac have insulator washers under the contacts.

I cleaned the black paint off the bezel so now it's nice and shiny[8D]

Green is probably the signal wire from the coil, brown is probably +ve feed from switched side of fuse box and that leaves the purple as probably the earth?

Probably...................

Mislead Panky's message. Brown is earth and purple is power. Probably...........

I've put a call out on the Renault Classic Car Club forum. Hopefully someone will recognise it.

Thanks for the additional pictures. I'm with Panky, brown is definitely the earth. Still reckon the green goes to the coil and lilac is power.

What you need is a Talbot wiring plan. British and French design and build .I have the same Tacho My wiring diagram shows
Purple +ve ( Switch side of ignition , battery is -ve earth)
Brown earth
Green/red -ve coil (ie distributor side)
I hope this clarifies and note 1: Majority opinion rules & 2: I am a safe distance away if the smoke escapes
