Summer will soon be here!

There's been a few vans damaged when being recovered (that never happens) as the winch man puts a strap around the track control arm to drag it onto the truck - b..e..n..d [:(!] So an essential mod I reckon.

I made mine low. Mainly because I have the battery box in the front foot well and wanted it to be lower than that :)

Because they built Commers so reliable that they should never need a tow ;);)

But they need to be loaded to and off-loaded from trailers when we ferry them around the country to show them to our adoring public:)

I think this is a good opportunity for you to offer again, I don't really have the time to make a batch and send them all out.

So a bit of advice please. I want to strip the drive shaft down, mainly to replace the seals and to make it easier to clean and paint everything.
So my question is,
"How can I get the bearing off without destroying it?"
I'm sure there not meant to be stuck tight on, as they have a lock nut to keep them in place, then again I'm sure they never suspected them to last 40 odd years, lol.
I have held the back plate on 2 axle stands and smashed the end of the drive shaft down with a big hammer and still no luck. I gave up because I don't want to bed the back plate.

I was happy to do this, but then a mate said that because the racers are hardened as soon as you heat the bearing you destroy this and in turn that will knacker the bearing. Is my mate wrong ?
At the moment the bearings are good.

It all depends how much heat you use, a paint stripper/heat gun is as hot as you can go, certainly no flames unless you keep a good distance.
Just warming it lightly is usually enough to expand it a couple of thou :)
