subframe question

hi all

I want to lower the subrame because I need to work on the bottom of my engine and I will leave the engine in the Fan

do I need to remove the upper control arms ,to lower the subframe ?
I was thinking of removing the drums completely with the backingplates and all so I can leave the handbrake cables in place also I want to take as less of as I can ,because its only a matter of making some extra clearance in the upper bridge of the subrame for my oilsump ...it has been rubbing the subframe and started leaking > I have to weld it and that's why I want to remove just the subframe as simple as I can

I have a P .Olyslager motor manual for the comer 1500/2500 range but that says that I need to take the scocks and springs out before I can remove the upper and lower control arms ...and my guess is that there must be an easier way of doing this ;)

I took all the steering linkages off and disconnected the brake lines ,the anti roll bar is also disconnected so ,i'm half way there I guess

first I thought I was able to remove the upper control arms by taking off the stubaxle carrier ,but the bolts are so damn stuck !!

so can any of you guys help me out with some advice ?
thanks in advance

Philip

I'm almost certain the front axle assembly will drop off in one piece, but the engine is also mounted on it so it wont stay in place when you drop the axle assembly.
Here's one Martin prepared earlier.

thanks panky

i'm using an engine mount from the inside of the cabin to hold the engine in place ,so that problem will be solved ;)
and since my engine is a ford 2L OHC from a sierra it already has a heavy duty gearbox mount which will be able to keep that in place too ;)

so thanks for the replay I will try the wiggle it out than ;)

Yes, flip over the upper control arms, there is even brackets on the subframe to hold them while you do this! No need to remove the stub axle carriers.

thanks martin ,that's what I did ,I could tell from the photo's above how you did it ;)

and that was easy to do ,I took the drums of with the backing plates because I couldn't get acces to the handbrake cable ,the automatic gearbox of the 2L ford sierra is in the way
so problem solved
all I have to do now is "hang" the motor and lower the subframe (first thing tomorrow )

i'm liking the commer more and more ,i'm not wrenching but i'm bonding right now ...hahahahaa

If you remove the shock absorber and use a 50cm length of 12mm threaded rod in its place to hold the spring compressed, it makes the whole thing a lot easier to handle, and makes getting it back together a lot safer. Here's a picture of when I did mine. (before I cleaned it up!)

You can see the nice shiny threaded rod poking out of the shocker mounts, and the top wishbones aren't under spring tension, and are all ready to go back on their mounts.

thanks colin ,that makes it easier for sure ,but I managed to get it out today
it was a bit hard because I forgot to take out/off the rubber engine mounts from the subframe .therefor I had to jack it up again
but its out now and the work can start

I will update pics later tonight
