Running problems

I've got a webber carb on my commer & for some reason I can only drive approx 30 miles distance & then the van acts like it has petrol starvation. Has anyone else had this problem? or has anyone got any ideas how to solve the problem. I have changed petrol pump & pipe filter, leads & plugs, points & condensor!

Could be petrol vapourisation. As the engine compartment gets hot, the petrol vaporises before it can get into the engine. I have had one van with a tray mounted between the carb and manifold, this helped stop the heat from the exhaust manifold, heating up the carb.

Do you mean it dies and stops?once it's been stood a bit does it then start and run ok for a short while,If so could be the coil breaking down when it gets warm, hope it helps.[?]

I have removed the carb and cleaned then test ran and found air bubble in fillter and quite a lot of pressure in petrol pipe to carb.

sounds like a heat related issue. i am inclined to agree with martin on this ,try a stainless heat shield and some thermal exhaust wrap. also worth checking the fuel air tank vent.:)

"you were only supposed to blow the bloody doors off"

Sounds like to me a rusty petrol tank suckin rust up and blocking the fuel suply pipe. Or one of my vans ended up with water in the petrol where the rain channel runs off the roof its smack in line with the petrol cap and if the seal is dodgey round the cap allows water to get in to the tank!! [:0]

just another thought and one thats easy to check if it breaks down again, take off the petrol cap and if you hear a sucking noise the tank breathers blocked causing it to back syphon the fuel.

I have occasional petrol starvation problems - possibly down to gunk in the tank combined with a fuel outlet right at the bottom of home made petrol tank.

Re route the fuel line through the rad mounts round front of rad and back to the carb, this will sort out any heat/fuel probs, had the same for ages before I worked it out , no more probs and that was some 10 yrs ago , Fuel cap also a good try

What a brilliant tip [^]. Hey Admin that's definitely one for 'Mechanical Tips' on the website.

Hi :)
Having problems again with Betty ,when she gets very warm she starts to have an irratic idle and then stalls at junctions, she wil start again after a bit of churning over and then idle but rough.. ive read this topic and it seems to lead to the coil ? ive replaced the points but not condenser or coil, looks like the coil it realy old and scabby she drives ok at speed but starts to "flutter" a bit when on over run . she has LPG but i have taken all the pipes off so that cant be the problem . i have also checked valve clearances which are ok the plugs are a nice biscuit colour i have stripped the carb which is a Weber and blown all the jets out etc
i'm doing a compression test tommorow to check the engine but i think it will be ok hopefully

Any ideas out there ??

Thanks again you Commer Chums

Amos :D

Thanks Martin Again [^]

will be doing the compression test soon and if thats ok then i go out and get a coil. points and condenser ill let you know how i get on

Thanks

Amos :D

ooh bum :(

Checked compressions All at 110psi :D i have replaced the coil with a standard 12v non Balast coil (same as it had on) new points/condenser as well still the same if not getting worst !! if you rev it up it will go all day i think but if you allow it to go any way near idle then if runs rough and stalls (will start straight way but again runs rough) had a good look around thought i heard an air leak from the manifold gasket (inlet) side sprayed WD40 from underneath and the idle seemed to pick up ?? i have taken the manifold off the gasket is scruffy but cant realy see a tear or any damage :( will replace it any way when speedys re open on monday . will replace cap arm and leads as well although they all look pretty new but you never know . any one out there know the float height setting for a weber carb that is fitted on these ???? ihave stripped the carb and cleaned all the jets out etc there seems to be plenty of fuel in the float chamber when i strip it so dont think its float height . ******any one got a carb that they might want to sell if i run out of ideas ?*************.

i know ive rattled on for a bit but im well p*ssed off she was running realy well recently and am off to Clumber Park to a Queen tribute band in a few weeks so rely need to sort it.

Any ideas would be greatfull recieved

Thanks Again

I have been trouble with tick over problems with Chicko, for a while. Just before the mot was due, I replaced the manifolds as the exhaust was cracked. I also put on a new gasket. Since then, it has run like a dream and much more powerful [:0]
I wonder if you have an air leak from the manifold [?] as I think that was my problem.

that sounds very possible - would make a lot of sense with Bessies' tickover troubles as she has had intermittent problems and a leaking exhaust manifold. Hadn't thought of that as a possible cause - thanks Martin.:)
