Percy the Highwayman

I ordered it from combicolor.co.uk and they state it as 'light blue' but from research from some sites from the US its called 'Marlin Blue'.Its either RAL5012 or RAL5015 depending how you game got your computer monitor configured;)

The white is just RAL9010

Seriously though, I'm being far too unkind - Percy looks marvellous in that combo :p and very similar to what we've been considering for our Hi-Tor.

Thanks for the info on the roller painting which is absolutely priceless and makes our own repaint dream more like likel. We don't want a show winning finish just something tidy which we can continue to easily touch up when the inevitable rust bubbles through again.

We've just returned from our hols and our Hi-Tor is looking unloved and is ticketless in our drive following its winter storage. This weekend will see a full going over to prep for its MOT next week, so fingers crossed there !

Paul,yes im definteley up for a meet just got to get the front valance sorted and the tax and im on the road.Mot is in June so got a couple of weeks before I have to start worrying[8D]

Ive been researching this method of painting for about 2 years and was going to try it out on the MK2 Capri I had last year but sold it on before I had a chance.Percy was a prime candidate as the paint wasnt the best before I started rollering so didnt matter if I got a really poor result.The prep is horrible and never seems to end and ive noticed a few bits ive missed but thats the beaulty of it because you can just o back to it when you want to.The door bottoms need replacing with some new panels but not til the end of the season as I just want to get him back on the road now.With this method I can just replace the door bottoms and do paint to match up.The same thing applies with any other niggly areas-they can just be done as and when.

Today I have been preping the cab and repairing the rust patch just below the grill (a couple of pages back on the thread you will see what I found).Ive managed to lay the first layer down on the cab body.The only hassle is you have to use a brush to go round the windows etc which can be very annoying[B)]

I know people will say 'oh go and get it done properly' but..

1.Firstly I havent got the knowledge to spray it myself,the equipment or the room.
2.I havent got the money for a proffesional paint job.(Ive spent about £80-90 on paint and materials so far

Hi guys, your efforts have definitely got me thinking - it hurts a bit:I Where did you get you paint from - I've Googled it and the cheapest I can find is about £25 for a 2.5 litre tin (if you buy two) plus a fiver postage, does that seem about right. Are you using the foam 'brushes' like it says on the darkside link. Hope you don't mind picking your brains, it's what I do:)

The price seems about right, are the brushes you describe similar things to paintpads? I am thinking of watering it down a touch, and using radiator rollers.

The foam brushes are just that - wedge shaped pieces of foam on a stick:I

Ive found you can use a normal brush as the paint levels out if you thin it correctly.Either way you have got to flat it between each coat so as im doing it on a budget I cut out the foam brushes in favour of an extra couple coats in the 'brushed' areas.

I think the total for my 2 tins and delivery was £60.38 from http://www.combicolor.co.uk and turned up very quickly.
I think Lawsons are doing a deal on on 2 tins and it comes up at £58 odd.

Once ive got Percy finished I will write up a guide with my experiences as it seems everyone who has used this method has a different version with what to do and what not to do.I will also get some pics up of the paint close up to see what the finish is like.

Just a quick update on the painting.

Heres of close up pic of the first coat of white on the cab.Notice the orange peel effect,witha bit of sanding with 400 grit paper to flat it disappears (tried it out on the roof yesterday).
I think the art of it is laying enough down so when you flat it with the paper you dont go right through while also not putting on too much so you have a lot of work to do to get rid of the orange peel[8D]

I also filled the holes drilled on the door for the old mirrors-Ive got clamp on ones now from Ratsport[8D] which should make Percy look a lot cleaner on the lines

So not too bad so far...the cab is one coat (blue and white),the side panels and roof are on second coat.
Excuse me for not doing the front valance but just waiting out for the price on Martins front valance before I decide which way to go;)
Also ive noticed Percy has got odd side lights.drivers side one is a cone like shape-lol

That looks great already, will be really tidy when finished. Considering how much it costs for a professional respray I think with the results your getting I would be inclined to have a go aswel.

Rain has stopped play on the painting over the last couple of days so ive spent my time sitting on the internet ordering some 'bling' for Percy's front end to go with his new grill[8D]
