Out and about

If you replace all the shoes and give everything a good hose down you won’t have to worry about that again :)

I know soupdragon that why I,m kicking myself that I didnt get the rear ones . Could of all been in 1 package , postage would of been and duty would of been much the same. I need to write a list and just bite the bullet .

That’s not the end of the world. Just get all the pads done and clean then when you need to do the rear cylinders you won’t have to get the NBC suite out the cupboard again.

Last weekend was the Straigtliners speed show at Elvington. Over 5,000 tickets were sold for the busiest one yet. I didn't race but did display my van which, as usual drew the crowds away from the real racers! I caught a bloke in the back muttering to himself about hew mad, mental and crazy it is. He turned round to climb out and it was only Guy Martin!

The rad level is about right, no matter how much coolant I put in it always settles just above the fins so don't worry about that.
Hi panky
I’ve recently had a new core fitted to my old rad and although it’s helped immensely with the temperature I still have problems with the water level dropping. I cannot see a leak anywhere and it drops below the fins. This is to low in my eyes but do you think different?
It was doing the same before I sorted the rad so I’m starting to wonder about the head gasket as I’m baffled as to where the coolant is going. I have put a bottle at the overflow pipe and there is a small amount in there which made think that a blown head gasket maybe pressurising the system. Any opinions are appreciated

I like to see the coolant level about half an inch above the fins minimum but with plenty of air gap for expansion. How much are you losing? are there any bubbles in the coolant when you look into the top of the rad with the engine running. The first thing I'd check is the rad cap, is it the long reach type and is the seal in good condition? I've known short reach ones fitted resulting in coolant loss. Hoses and clamps - is everything tight and no pin holes in the hoses. Next the water pump, feel around under the pulley for any dampness. Core plugs are known to rot through especially the one under the starter motor and the one hidden behind the flywheel, check for any dribbles at the bottom of the gearbox bell housing.
If all is found to be OK then maybe it's time to think head gasket, there are kits available to check for exhaust gasses in the cooling system but I've not had any experience of them and not aware of availability and cost but might be worth investigating. In the meantime make sure you've got a bottle of Radweld available just in case.
Good luck.

Found a combustion leak detector kit on ebay, didn't realise they were so cheap so I've bought one to have in.

There are also plenty of pressure test kits on there too.

For that price it’s defo worth testing it first for peace of mind and to stop you going down other rabbit holes.
I was going to test mine a few years ago but didn’t need to as it was leaking gasses so bad it turned the coolant from blue to grey :D

Well this week turned out to be an epic adventure. I had arranged with Christine to surprise Tim with a visit in the V8. On Tuesday night the fan belt flew off so I fitted my spare. Wednesday night I displayed the van at The Motorist as part of a motorsport event. Whilst I was there Christine messaged and asked me if I could bring Tim's birthday present with me when I visit. So..
On Thursday I took a trip to York to collect it. A Norton Cafe Racer.. then the brake lights packed up. I now have a microswitch on the pedal pad, I'm not fitting another hydraulic one, it's had 3 so far.
Yesterday I surprised Tim with a visit and the bike.
I've done well over 400 miles this week without an issue. And managed 17.8 mpg!

Well it’s taken 8 years but I finally managed to go camping without it raining :D . Spent the weekend in Lydford at a really friendly campsite. They saved me one of the few shady pitches. If we had known the marquee in the next field with the live band wasn’t a wedding but the end of the charity pub walk we would have gone  . To be honest the only place that wasn’t too hot for the dog was the gorge. Thankfully the pub was only a ten minute walk lol.
