Oh No, not again!

Hi,
been having similar type problems myself...
back in july tramps started chugging occassionally, then back firing seriously...
so I put in new points, condenser, rotor arm, dissy cap, coil and ht leads.... few hundred miles later we conked out again... moved the coil to the wheel arch.... then changed the condenser and points again.... thought the problem was sorted, been moving around locally without problems, and then today just as i was embarking on a longer journey from brighton for worcestershire, I lost all power... luckily i was within 3miles of my mechanic, but by the time he had a minute to take a look, tramps was happily purring away again.....
whhaaaaaaa....!!!! tempermental electrics are more frusrating than a broken engine.. [!]
i'm now thinking it could be dodgy old wiring somewhere between battery and coil but any other suggestions grately received....

Take a piece of wire and connect the positive on the battery to teh positive on the coil. This bypasses all the ignition switch and lets you see if the problem is with the switch wiring or the engine electrics.
Also change the vacum pipe between the distributor and the carb.
Last time this happened on an old car it turned out to be a knackered petrol pump (in that case it was an SU one but sometimes you have to be just methodical and keep isolating areas or replacing parts)

I thought fuel pump too Nancye.My riley 's fuel pump would somtimes stick a quick flick & it would be ok again,I now have a facet pump.

Smurf is 'ok'......with a poss 26 vans going to Coventry, I'm hoping some kind soul will have her running a little smoother

After our breakdown at Cambridge, i have to admit i am a little nervous about the journey to Coventry on friday...

Hopefully about 9am, that way we should make it by midnight... we needed the lighting from Panky's mini to get the boys tent up at Cambridge as we arrived so late.. It gets dark early now too...
Will be make lots of stops to give Smurf a proper rest on route too
