It fits in the end of the crankshaft. The end of the gearbox shaft passes throught the clutch components and sits in this bush. It effectively stops the end of the shaft from rattling around inside the crankshaft. They wear out and should be checked at every clutch change.

is it easy to fit? no, of course not, it all has to come out again right! ...but honestly, would that cause the problem?
It can do, that's why it's best to check it out while it's all apart. Sounds like you may have to take it all out again anyway so worth getting one. Fitting is OK but getting the old worn one out can be fun!

Yes the front pulley where the starting handel goes. Get hold of it with both hand and pull/push it to see if it moves back and forward. If it does your crank spigot bushes are worn which is common so when you put your foot on the clutch its taking the play up. What the noise like? put a vid on here through photo bucket and i will soon tell you

Have a look at this page http://www.rootes.com/Catalogpages/p4.html
And at the bottom with baz's correct terminology of the component in question you will see them. There half moon flat shaped bearings and stop the end float in the crank. You shouldnt really have any that you can see by push pulling the crank but ive seen some commers that are like a cock in a sock and move alot. Big job if its your problem but i would want to be sure thats your fault first.

The things that stop the crank from moving along it's axis are thrust washers IIRC (I know I said bearings before). The thing that sits in the end of the crank and in which the end of the gearbox shaft rests is the Spigot bush. At work so can't post pics at the moment (tried earlier but computer said "No").
